Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Colin Fennelly hitting 3-5 in one game ,T J going a few points better today, Walter Hurling up a storm at different times, Mark Kelly continuing to improve, Mick Fennely back on the field, Padraigh Walsh adding to his reputation, Holden, Kennedy and Fogarty fighting hard for places, Michael Rice hoovering around some where in the back ground, things are looking good and lastly with the maestro himself Tommy waiting to unveil his superb talents as he will before the year is over things look even better.

I know that Wexford are a 1b side but this was the most satisfying kilkenny performance yet. It was clear that they are developing a system. The angles of running, movement and ball into the forwards had Wexford all over the place, we were far from clinical in terms of finishing but it was just great to see us play balls which gave our forwards the advantage.

As well as the angles of the ball in the support running was top notch, it looks like they are working on it. They have been doing this little drill before throw in throughout the league where four players (2 sets of 2) all moving around at different angles, one of the players hits a low ball towards one player and another player runs of the shoulder of the player who has controlled it to receive a popped hand pass. It seemed liked a pointless unorganised drill but considering the amount of off the shoulder running and pop passes when the forwards received the ball today was great.

Padraig Walsh hurled very well today and Richie hogan gets on a lot of ball, it will be very hard to pick midfield with Mick Fennelly coming back. The big concern for me is we are very far away from pinning down any of the half back positions.

It is crazy that we now have to wait three weeks for the semi finals before we will learn more. Very sizeable kilkenny crowd there today which was good to see.

South-East Radio said there were more Kilkenny fans than Wexford , which is unusual

Noticed this drill particularly today in the warm up. They utilised it hugely especially in the first 15 mins and it worked a treat and completely unsettled the Wexford back line who were flapping.

This is the read out from an app I use at matches. I didn't actually register TJ's 3rd goal (midway through the second half) I forgot entered it just forgot to hit ok to register it. The goal was from a free kinda cheekily struck or mis-struck was hard to tell. For those who couldn't make it, it might help a bit. Some of the things maybe a little confusing like puck outs won or lost as at times the game is so fast it's hard to get it all in the phone.

Wally looked sore goin off didn't see what it was exactly but thought it was his left leg possibly ankle but not at all sure. Hopefully it's not bad as he was hurling seriously well he should have had another goal as should most of the forwards they all had chances they could and would bury another day.

Murphy- good saves, solid, great delivery
Murphy- not his best performance but alright
JJ- very good over all, got turned once by Guiney but other than that all good
Holden- definitely not a corner man for me and really struggled against Jacob, half line is his place
    Fogarty- solid if unspectacular
Jackie- very solid, no silly over carrying and a point scored to boot
Joyce- did what was asked looked comfortable
P Walsh- very good, swept along the half backline and distributed good ball forward won an amount of Wex puckouts
R Hogan- savage for winning possession and creating opportunities but drove a lot of wides which could have gone to lads with easier shots.
Walter- savage altogether, flashed a second goal chance across the goal in the second half, went off injured.
Colin- worked tirelessly and won tons of ball and set stuff up all over the shop, he's few shots didn't come off.
TJ- absolute master class, made it look like a piece of piss, scored 2-4 from play absolute bullet in the first half and was clear through 30 seconds into the second half and finished neatly. Could do no wrong
Larks- showed well and caused panic, set up a lot and broke intelligent ball down
Kelly- fought fierce hard but O'Hanlon the full back was sharp and a big unit, Kelly still did well and laid off a lovely return to Wally for the first goal
Power- Showed really well, caused problems all over and was chasing back into the full back line at one stage and making the tackle got a few nice scores too.
    Subs
Mick Fennelly- rusty but worked doggedly, some came off for him but lots didn't, another few games and he'll be flying.
Tommy- solid, had some nice touches and did better than Fogarty
Hogan- very solid for he's time on and drove through a few lads to get it done, best performance I've seen from him this year.
Shefflin- very quiet just didn't happen.
Taggy- got a few minutes for Walter it was a rushed sub and he did ok without impressing.

26 All stars off the bench is not too shabby!

Overall we were streets ahead if a few more things had of come off this could have been a lot worse for Wexford.

The ref McAllister from Cork was a disgrace for the last 15 mins of the first half, felt it was his job to give Wexford frees for nothing and get them back in the game. Before that and after that he was actually fine and quiet fair but he must have given them 4-5 frees in that period and virtually none were warranted.

I posted after the Tipp match that KK seemed to have a much greater goal threat this year compared to 2013. The stats now clearly show this:

    2014 (NHL) total (so far): 18 (3 goals/game)

    2013 (Championship) total: 2 (0.33 goals/game)
    2013 (NHL) total: 9 (1.3 goals/game)

    2012 (Championship) total: 15 (2.5 goals/game)
    2012 (NHL) total: 17 (2.4 goals/game)

Great KK crowd at the game yesterday it was good to see such large numbers travelling.
On the game I though that wally and richie power were brilliant in the first 15 mins they were switching and running off each other and had wexford backs all at asea, then richie went over to the other side for a while and larkin and wally didnt seem to link up as well. The work rate and chasing back from the forwards was exceptional too(wally and richie power chased back to the full back line at one stage).
TJ was almost unplayable he is some man to catch a ball and 3-09 is a great haul. Mark Kelly tried hard and got his just rewards with few nice points near the end as well as setting up a few other scores - think he is our full forward this year. Colin Fennelly was good but again hit a few wides he was almost trying to hard to get on the score board.
Richie Hogan and Padraig Walsh were v good in midfield although richie does tend to hit a couple of poor wides when there are beter options but he got on alot of ball yesterday in both halves.
The backs weren't bad overall but thought joey holden was a bit loose in the corner but maybe he's more suited to the half back line. Jackie was better in his distribution and the ball in to the forwards was of great quality although some one needs to tell Joyce to have a look up every now and again as he tends to hit an awful lot of aimless ball.
Ref was good except for the ten minute spell before halftime taht he seemed determined to get wecford back into it - dont know how he gave a free against wally for charging. Even the linsman was laughing as he ran past cody after it.
On to the semi in three weeks against Galway which I guess is in Thurles so hopefully we get the early game if it's a double header and we can get back in to town early hopefully celebrating another handsome vicory.

As a Kilkenny hurling supporter I must say that I am extremely happy with the way Cody and Co have used the League. He stated before it started that he would be experimenting but all the while been competitive. He was true to his word and now we can look forward to another game in which to complete the experimenting and settle down more positions.

The players are busting a gut every time they go out, whether it is due to competition for places or hunger it is certainly working. They do seem to blow up somewhat at times but that is due to heavy training I guess. Mind you, unlike most other managers you will never hear Cody blame heavy training for losing or playing poorly.

Great rhythm in the first 20 minutes yesterday only to be upset by the ridiculous conduct from the ref. he completely lost the run of himself in the last fifteen minutes of the first half. Things improved in the second half but I'm putting that down to the fact that our players were so superior the ref didn't matter.

In mentioning the ref I have to refer to the challenge on Colin Fennelly early on. He was shouldered into the head area and the ref saw nothing wrong with it. Fennelly did talk to the ref about it but he was having none of it, just pointing to his shoulder. Well yes ref we know the Wexford player used his shoulder but he got Fen in the front of his body not in the shoulder.

That foul worked for Wexford as Fen wasn't right after it. In fact I didn't expect to see him on the pitch after half time. The only consolation is that if teams go out to stop Fen because he is on fire then other players are finding space - like TJ yesterday.

Three week break now from the county scene and club action the weekend after next. Shamrocks v Clara game should be a big attraction.

Was at the game yesterday and regarding the newer lads thought Padraig Walsh is streets ahead of the rest. You can see that he is actually learning from game to game as well as toughening up.
Kennedy in the backs is the same, although he didn't play yesterday.

Joey Holden has a lot to do. Lets the game come to him rather than dictates the game, in his position. Not a corner back, just not hungry enough for it. He may get that over the coming months, but as of now, not someone we could start. What age is he? Does he play centre back for Ballyhale?

Jackie T is no centre back...not a great catcher of the ball, which is a must for a centre back.

Mark Kelly is not physically tough enough yet... and therefore should be looking to use his pace more, when he gets the ball should run straight for goal at all times, as this somehting he has over most defenders. Still can't see him starting though and would put him behind John Power, and that's just on one 30mins for John against the Dubs. The key thing like Joey Holden is to toughen up and more drive...at this level its the difference between the players that make in and not, e.g. Paddy Hogan (he never lacked ability)

Where's Ger Aylward ...is he playing this year..

On a whole yesterday you gotta remember that KK were playing Wexford yesterday. KK tried for a couple of minutes went 10points up then eased off, then again in the second half.

Any news on Walter Walsh.......listened on the radio and they suggested that he had done his ankle ligaments.......thought it was crazy for them to annouce that based purley off seeing him roll his ankle and then go off.

What's the name of that app please dude?

Good to read the posts from those who were at the match. With regard to Mercurys's observations I remember well when Jackie Tyrell first came on the scene and I believe he actually was tried at half forward, I said to myself this guy has no touch, no pace and no bottle and will never make the grade. Well Cody saw something in him I could not and as usual Cody was right and I was as wrong as the width of Croke Park, so i would not be hard on any of the newcomers but you are right in so far that sometimes it takes two or even three seasons for a player to mature into a senior of inter county quality. Michael Fennely is a case in point. If memory serves me correctly he was sub for a season or two while Derek Lyng and Cha were in thier prime.

15 euro into the colleges final on Saturday. A bit steep considering league games only cost a tenner.

Yeah he's had a great league. 1-17 in the 6 games so far, that's very good going.

No true, but we will have to Limerick on the 20th! Ha..ha!

From supporters point of view having the semi final in a Limerick is an inconvenience. Cody won't be bothered by the venue though. The more the players are discommoded the better, as far as Cody is concerned. He always loves a challenge and will relish this one in Limerick. Frequently over the years he would bring the players to different venues throughout the county for training sessions to avoid complacency.

Haven't heard anything about Wally. When he left the pitch he just sat on the bench with the selectors. There didn't appear to be any panic. Any news on John Power? Worried for TJ for a bit yesterday when he got a knock on the leg but he appeared to run it off, thankfully.

Not the point. Sure Cody would have Kilkenny play on High Street or O'Connell Street if they had to.

Semple Stadium has a better playing surface, and there is a better atmosphere in the Stadium and around the town! It is a no brainer. In Limerick you are out on the edge of the city.

Thurles is more central for everybody to arrive by car or by train. Bar the only thing is it gives Tipperary a home advantage (which in their case often means feck all). But, it suits Clare, Galway and Kilkenny to play there.

I know all about Thurles I can assure you. I'm just saying that Cody will look at the positives in relation to playing in Limerick and will have the players tuned up accordingly, as he always does. There will be no moaning from the camp.

@tbiggertycome - was at the game and was surprised that you said Larkin looked Sharp. Thought he was very poor, his 1st touch never killed te ball and indeed he got 3 balls in his hand. A Free out for overcarrying when he should of released inside for a goal chance, a point and a wide.

Galway would prefer Limerick ahead of Thurles. There's a motorway all the way down from Galway practically right to the gates of the Gaelic Grounds. The road from Galway down to Thurles is crap with hills and tight corners every 20 yards. Or it seems like it anyway.

You need to look at a map of Ireland EIRE1922 :D
It's much easier to get from Galway to Limerick than to Thurles (I would know :) ), and definitely easier to get from Clare to Limerick than to Thurles!

Tipp have lost a whoping 2 of the last 14 competitive games they have played in Semple Stadium, a shocking record indeed!

Clare, Galway and North Tipp fans would all be coming in to thurles via the one road and it most certainly would not suit everyone, Limerick is far more convenient for both Galway and Clare.

Fair enough I don't dispute what you've said all true. I however thought he looked better than he did on any occasion last year. He has played better this year and he did make mistakes but none that I would have deemed shocking. He tried hard and battled for every ball and not everything came off for him but he set up a good bit. Richie Hogan on the other hand drove six wides mainly when lads were in better positions and tried a few cross field balls which didn't and never would reach there man the way he hit them, yet overall I thought Richie had a good game. Lads will always make mistakes in games but overall I was happy with Larks performance, sharp may not be the correct adjective to have used however.

Didn’t mean to sound harsh but just thought after he played so well vs. Waterford we might see Larks push on but to me he didn’t look to be killing himself to get to balls. I do agree on Richie Hogan, at times his shot selection was poor but on two of the wides he was clearly looking for the corner men to break and neither did. I thought Walsh’s use of the ball was spot on all day almost. Including a brilliant pass to Larkin when Power had vacated his corner and Kelly left room for Larkin, unfortunately the move broke down. I thought Power looked Sharp early on and was helped by Wally having his man in trouble but the ball dried up going over that side and he probably was unlucky not to get more ball.

Overall it was a good win with the focus very much being on finding the player in a better position, (hence the handpasses and short flicks) and creating overlaps and space for players moving into that position at pace. I think if we get to Croker our game play will thrive there.

Aww...they can blame Galway County Council or the NRA for that. :D

Tipperary have a poor home record.

Thurles in central for all 4 counties!

Limerick on Easter Sunday eh? Not sure there will be a huge Kilkenny crowd.

Surely Nowlan Park would have made more sense? Pretty central for everyone :)

15 euro into the colleges final on Saturday. A bit steep considering league games only cost a tenner.

Well how is Limerick central so to all four counties?

    Tipp have a 'poor' record.

Certainly against Kilkenny in the past 13-14 meetings between the two! That is what you call 'Poor'!:D

OK lads the joking is over it is time to settle on our championship team, Assuming a fully fit panel here's mine,
    E Murphy
P Murphy JJ Delaney Brian Kennedy,
    T Walsh J Tyrell C Buckley
    M Fennelly P Walsh
Waltar Walsh C Fennelly TJ Reid
John Power M Kelly Henry Shefflin

It would be hard to see us start without any of Richie Hogan, Richie Power or Eoin Larkin so I'd swap Henry , Mark Kelly and John Power for the other three. Other than that id be happy with that team.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,091 ✭✭✭savannahkat

Apologies I meant Ritchie not John Power

Again you are wrong, in the last 14 meetings in Semple Stadium Tipp have won 8 KK 5 and a draw in 2009, which KK won after ET.

I would say that record would compare favourably to any other county that has met KK as often as we have.

I read where you said Richie Power not John Power. I agree with most of the above team but really it is a bit too early to judge Tommy, Buckley, M Fennnelly and even Henry yet.
    If not Tommy, then Holden.
    If not Buckley, then Joyce.
If not M Fen, then Lester.
If not Henry, then R. Hogan.

In fact I would find it very difficult to leave R Hogan out but would not like to see him in midfield.

  • Registered Users Posts: 367 ✭✭EIRE1922

You mean Brian Hogan surely? He is not going to lose his centre back spot.

The team Cody will go with bar injuries and all are back fully fit:

    Eoin Murphy,
Paul Murphy, J.J. Delaney, Jackie Tyrell
Tommy Walsh, Brian Hogan, Kieran Joyce,
    Michael Fennelly, Michael Rice,
Richie Power, Colin Fennelly, Richie Hogan,
Walter Walsh, Henry Shefflin, Eoin Larkin.

    Panel/Subs to choose from:

    T.J. Reid.
    Mark Kelly.
    Lester Ryan.
    David Herity.
    John Power.
    Aiden Fogarty.
    Joey Holden.
    Pádraig Walsh.
    Cillian Buckley.
    Brian Kennedy.
    Johnjo Farrell.
    Conor Fogarty.
    Joe Brennen.
    Shane Prendergast.
    Michael Walsh.
    Tomás Keogh.
    David Langton.

I could see King Henry being stuck for pace. Cody will not drop him to the bench and not start him. The best place is to stick him in full forward. Otherwise, I would start Mark Kelly, but it is not going to happen. Henry will start. Richie Hogan is too vital to be playing out in midfield. He has played well in the league games so far this year at midfield, but he was poor there in the Championship against Galway in the 2012 All-Ireland. He is better of in the forwards and we need his scoring ability more. A fully fit Michael Rice is the key man for Kilkenny's midfield along with a fully fit Michael Fennelly.

I am not talking about in Thurles! You are grasping at straws there like all Tipperary people do!

Count the recent big head to head games and come back to me with your figures!

You will find it is Kilkenny 11 or 12 wins to Tipperary's 1 win!?
