Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The reverse fixture was a narrow one goal win - Danny Agger on the score sheet on December 1st. Since then the Saints have ditched Nigel Adkins for ex Espanyol coach Mauricio Pochettino who has not moved his side forward at all it turns out with just one (eye catching) win against Man City in seven games. Liverpools latest signing Philippe Coutinho played a loan spell under Pochettino scoring 5 in 16 games and generally getting positive reviews. The manager tried to sign him in January.

Southampton last six LDWLLD They have a full strength squad.
Liverpool last six DDLWWW Liverpool are missing Allen, Kelly and Borini.

In terms of threat Soton are a one man team Ricky Lambert on 12 goals and one supposes he will be the focus of attack using his "heft" to unsettle Liverpools rather brittle central defence with three from Punchon/Rodriguez/Ramírez/Lallana just behind.

Liverpool as also a one man goal scoring side of course but Luis now has able support with Sturridge to make the space, with Coutinho and Downing adding different attacking qualities from the flanks.

Although Allen has been named in the Wales squad you have to assume he will not be part of todays match team so Henderson might start though, if he does then one of Coutinho and Sturridge won't.

Last weeks essentially two man midfield didn't actually work, so it'll be interesting to see if Rodgers tries it again.

I'd expect pretty much the same team from Rodgers today tbh. Wouldn't mind Henderson in along side Lucas and Gerrard, but I can't see him dropping any of that front four for today's game.

Saints have beaten City and Newcastle at home, and drew with Arsenal and Everton. Utd and Spurs have had slender 1 goal wins there.

So, it's far from a shoe in.

I'll go with a narrow 2-1 Liverpool. Suarez with a brace.

    Coutinho win.

Reckon Pool will win by the odd goal in three.

    Suarez to get both.

I think another high scoring win, this team is high on confidence at the moment and goals coming from others now as well.

    4-1 Suarez (2), Gerard, and 1 other.

Due a blip. One of those games where Liverpool look great for 30 minutes, don't score and everything goes to crap.

Think Liverpool will keep going and win today they have some momentum going and importantly Rodgers has added pace and quality in January to give them a lift

1-1. Liverpool fail to kill Southampton off and pay the price.

    Southampton to win 4-0

I think Liverpool will take almost maximum points for the rest of the season. Typical from them they have a bit of a habit of doing that every year after they have no silverware to play for.

Carra and Reina out according to the twitter box, Jones and Skrtel to start.

Given their recent performances that might work better with Skrtel in goal and Jones at CB.

Jordan Ibe on the bench according to twitter?

Confirmed #LFC team v Southampton: Jones, Johnson, Enrique, Agger, Skrtel, Allen, Gerrard, Downing, Coutinho, Sturridge, Suarez.

Confirmed #LFC subs: Gulacsi, Wisdom, Henderson, Shelvey, Lucas, Suso, Ibe.

Big day for young Jordan Ibe. He is a monster at u18 level though.

    That's a strange bench.

Only 1 defensive cover. Wisdom covering centre backs, Downing potential extra full back if needed.

    why drop Carra and Lucas?

Boruc, Clyne, Yoshida, Hooiveld, Shaw, Schneiderlin, Cork, Lallana (c), Ramírez, Rodriguez, Lambert

If Davis had been in there as well it'd have made more sense to pick Allen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,477 ✭✭✭✭Knex*

You would think an away game where both Carra and Reina are missing, is exactly the game where you would want Lucas in your team to add a bit of steel.

Allen has a much publicised injury as well. We look pretty light for me today.

This could come back to bite us in the ass if our forwards don't gel and start dominating the ball from the off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,473 ✭✭✭✭Super-Rush

I see no reason in dropping Lucas for Joe Allen.

If anything they should both start.

I'd feel better about having Allen in there if Hendo was too.

Not sure what their midfield is like though.

Hmmm no Lucas Allen playing is more weirdness from Rodgers, I see goals. I think he likes goals.

Ibe on the bench is a nice booster for him.

Carragher injured. I agree that dropping Lucas is a bit odd.

Lambert will cause us problems I reckon today.

I think we're going to beat everton and they're going to drop more points than us.

Not too bothered about todays result. (If it stays 1-0 to Everton).

Sights should be on catching Arsenal though.

Have a niggling feeling that we are going to drop points today. Things have been going to well of late and Southampton have been decent.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,438 ✭✭✭livinginkorea

Would start with Hendo but recon we will outscore them today. I think that's BR's new strategy - just outscore them.

Liverpool win at 19/20 on PP's, very tempting but losing money and dropping points is a nightmare way to start a Saturday. So i think i'll leave it just in case.

Suarez to score anytime at evens is a better bet. Imo.

I wouldn't be totally convinced of a win, particularly with the team out.

Team looks like Rodgers is gambling on outscoring the opposition.

Our last six away games in all comps have been pretty dismal result wise, and Southampton's last six home games have been just as poor.

nice bit of link up play between Suarez and Sturridge
