just wondered if a metal socket box can be replaced with a plastic one?we have 3 double sockets on a wall that is a little damp and the earth wires have all gone rusty.could they be replaced with plastic ones and if so what happens with the earth wire?will probably get a spark in to do it but would like to be with a bit of knowledge first.

Yes, a plastic box can be used.

As you have probably guessed water & electricity are bad mix, so it would be good to sort the damp issue out.

The earth wire(s) should be connected to the earth pin in the back of the socket. It would be prudent to replace the socket.

The best course of action would be to get a registered electrical contractor to do this work.

agreed simple job for anyone competent.
3 surface boxes and 3 matching sockets should cost around 10 euro.
