Sole Plate Requirement

    Is a sole plate always required in timber frame construction?

    Part L ACDs seem to omit it and show the timber panel bearing directly onto masonry

    Part L acceptable construction details are indictive of thermal performance and air tightness ONLY.

    they do NOT deal with structural issues at all.

    To answer your question, in any of my experience with TF houses there has always been a sole plate. this is used generally to ensure a level platform to lay the frames upon.

    A sole plate spreads the load evenly over the length of the masonry. Without it you would have alot of point loads. As most of the loadings are transferred onto the timber frame, this could lead to cracking in the masonry as a result of the live loads.
