    Did you download,
    mate,version 12,

i just use the cd version,660meg.
    version 7.

ok,version 12 mate, uses a different setup, screen,

    see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IK35nZuTlk
    point ,time,
    0.41,,

    erase disk and install ,mint,
if you press that it probably will use the entire drive as 1 large partition.

    You should have choosen,
    black cog icon,
    something else,
    create partition yourself,
    taken set it as partition,mint,
    size, 6gig.
    or maybe 9gig.

eg mate may need a slightly bigger partition ,than mint version 7.

see time point 1.oo,in the video,scisi3,

    creating extended partition,
    ?
    calculating files to skip,

COPYING ,files, IS THAT Wheres its at now?

on my pc,it takes about 25 minutes,to install mint,
    on a 5gig partition, mint version 7.
    cpu, 1.7ghz, ram 2gig.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,184 ✭✭✭riclad

    MY Advice is press,
    cntrl,alt ,delete,
See can you quit out of install process ,and switch off pc.

    OR PRESS escape ,esc key,
    click, cancel mint install .
it Should not take 3 hours to install mint on a modern pc.

When pc is powered off, wait 5 minutes,
    try a mint 12 install,
USING a partition size, 7 or 9 gig.

TAKE IT slow when partition screen appears,
click, something else, CREATE partition yourself.
    Set my own partition,

    Use slider set to 7,or 9gigabyte .
watch as it formats ,and makes the partitiion,
Should take 1 or 2 minutes.
then it starts the file copying process.
    Should take maybe 45 minutes,

    maybe 1 hour,max,
I never setup mint 12 on any pc.

    Set the size ,manually,
    7 0r 9gigabyte.

    quote;,
If you press Ctrl+Alt+Delete, Linux Mint brings you a menu to shut down, restart, or suspend your system.

    END quote ;
EG press those 3 keys at the same time,
Hopefully this will stop, and cancel the install process.
OR just press the pc Reset button.
This should restart pc,and bring you back to the boot menu,
IF you choose to leave cdr in the drive,it,ll reload mint 12 ,
    into the ram.

IT Might be easier to just buy WIN7 Premium dvd ,with license,
    then try and install it,
IT scans the hardrive, before formatting it.
    Erase everything on drive c;/

if win 7 installs normally ,the chances are the hardisk is ok.

its About 95 euro, from the link i posted.
IN a previous post,on this thread.
Buy it from an irish shop or website.
Pressing pc rest button ,is safer, than just switching off ,the power ,

ITS not a good idea to switch off a pc,when theres an installation, going on,
or hardrive,is copying files ,or loading files.

But sometimes its the only way to shutdown a pc.

You can also try alt and f4, press at the same time.
    Press cntrl,alt,del, 3 or 4 times,
to see does it have any effect.

QUOTE; I tried stopping the installation when I noticed the setup said something about formatting sdd w/o having asked me anything at all. (There isn't even a button to cancel the installation, just forward/backward. However, right-clicking the taskbar did it.)

    End quote;

Right clicking ,the taskbar, cancel ,stop the installation.

    Hey

    Back from work.

Ok so i followed your instructions and i am now at a table called 'installation Type', it came up after i clicked the 'something else' button. I am not sure how to create a partition, i will click the new partition table and see what happens....

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,184 ✭✭✭riclad

Before the drive is formatted, partitioned, mint should give you an option,
    to DUAL boot,
eg it leave windows os as it is, install mint linux, alongside your existing windows folders,
eg Leave windows 7 partition as it is.
    IN case where there,s
data or files, you may want to copy ,or use in the future after mint is installed.

USE entire disk for mint partition, option ,erases all files, including windows,os, folders, my
    documents.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,184 ✭✭✭riclad

do you want to erase info,
    erase all disk?

    MOUNT POINT IS,

    /boot

    location for partition , beginning,

    use EXT4 JOURNALING FILE SYSTEM,
    partition size in megabytes,

    7000,

    this may erase all windows,files,
    documents,erase drive c;?all files?

    is that ok,?

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,184 ✭✭✭riclad

'no root file system is defined'

  • Registered Users Posts: 51 ✭✭SamIsta

    ....not sure what that means...

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,184 ✭✭✭riclad

    TO BE HONEST,
I DO NOT KNOW how to install version 12,

i think you should just download version 7,
    i,ll post the link,

    i,ve never done this be4.

    12 makes 4 partitions,

    7, makes 1 partition,

i can install mint in 5 minutes,
its 10 times easier to install.

its possible, unbuntu made have made ,partitions,
    i dont know ,
that made need to be deleted,

    or click,menu, go,back,

    go back, menu,go back,

    and click,partition,

    ok,USE ENTIRE disk, 200gig,
    500 gig,etc,

    then it,ll just ,
set mount points as it likes, automatically ,as per 1 ;large partition for
    mint 12.

eg go back to install, partition ,point, see here,
    http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2012/01/14/manual-disk-partitioning-guide-for-linux-mint-12-kde/

    watch this video,3mins,

    it sets up,partition,

    doesnt ask 10 questions,
    re mount points,boot ,

    watch the video,post back here.

i think i will try the version 7 instead, thats the 'Gloria' yes...???

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,184 ✭✭✭riclad

LET version 12 ,use the entire disk,
    this erase all windows files,

i dont know how to set up 4 partitions in version 12,

its out of my range of expertise,

    EG CLICK,MENU,GO BACK,
GO BACK, til it reaches point in video,

    see video.
    time .0.43 ,

click erase disk, INSTALL Linux mint,

    or cancel,the install completely,

    http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2012/01/14/manual-disk-partitioning-guide-for-linux-mint-12-kde/

    0.43 ,
    menu,installation type;,

logo down arrow ERASE ENTIRE DISK,

    SO ITS up to you,
    erase disk,
    proceed with version 12 install,

    or CANCEL the installation.
