I help a few people with their training. I know I've made some of them cry like little kids with some turbo sessions but to my knowledge none of them puked. Got my programme from Mr Monkey on Sunday, looked at tonights turbo, and knowing what I know from years gone by, thought "Oh. Right. Thats a puker". Least now I know enough to put a bucket out.

I hope its hurts like hell you little biatch:)

Never puked (that i can remember) but close to passing out/hyperventilating on 1 or 2, tis all good

As i said i hope it hurts like hell you princess.

I recall puking during an FTP test a year or so again... session or dodgy gel, I am not sure.

Have done all three, but I don't think you are talking about a night out.

Tunney - if you can puke without showing a noticeable drop in cadence or power I will be very impressed.

Tomorrow's Facebook competition - "can you identify in this graph the point at which Tunney spilled his guts?"

I predict a puke time of around 44.40 into the session.

Have you goal limits on that or all out power?

Ick. That graph looks painful. I have yet to puke, Ive only got to the almost passing out stage. Cant wait to hear how(when) it goes.

Riding home last night I stopped at a red light at a crossroads. I was on the left and at the front of queue. A car started edging up past me indicating left. Disinclined to be creased by a car turning left as I was going straight on I moved to the front and centre of the queue. Stopped and waited for the lights to change. Car behind drove into the back of me, a gentle "fvck you cyclist" nudge.

I got off my bike, looked at the lady driver and she just glared at me. I took out my phone, took a photo of the reg and rode on. Straight to the Garda station. Now it took a while to see a guard but better things and all but when I did he took the details and asked how I wanted to pursue it "formally or informally". Statements and court didn't appeal so I said informally.

By the time I got home (10 minutes) I had a voicemail from the guard saying that he had talked to the lady and she did not deny the incident but denied intent. She apologised and "if I was happy to leave it there we would". I am as hopefully the next time she considers "teaching a cyclist a lesson" she will pause and realise that there could be consequences for her.

PS Turbo was not a puke fest. In hindsight the pukey ones were the ones I never expected.

    Elite Hydroforce turbo trainer

When the winter after my first season of tri came around it was time to get a turbo. Christo in CycleSuperStore (great guy, like alot of others in bike shops now gone. I wish owners would remember we come for the staff more than the product lines), pushed me towards an Elite Hydroforce trainer.

I'd done my research and I know that fluid trainers were quieter and didn't loose resistance over time like mag trainers. So I went for it. Its probably coming up to ten years old and its still going strong. Albeit it gets less use know that it used to.

The elastogel on the roller means that it doesn't shred tyres and wheels don't need to be changed to ride indoors or outdoors. With multiple resistance levels from "pi$$ easy" up to "ouchie" it did me for years.

A year or so after buying it I bought an add on that estimated power generation and displayed on a head unit. This gave a whole new lease of life to it and enabled more controlled sessions. My first taste of power training and I liked it.

I will be the first to admit I like turbo training. I find sessions interesting and suffering fun. I had no problem doing 5 hour sessions on this trainer. It felt like time well spent and I think they brought me on alot.

After a few seasons of the turbo trainer with the power estimator I got SRMs and two things amazed me. Firstly that over steady efforts how close the numbers were. Secondly that I allowed myself micro breaks. Half a second here or there - too short to register on the turbo but the SRMs spotted it. That being said given the difference in price I can't complain.

With the impending arrival of kids I realised I'd be spending even more time on turbo so I got an interactive trainer. The Elite Hydroforce is still out the shed and occasionally gets used - either my me if I need to quickly set up in the kitchen, or by herself if she wants a spin. Also handy for side by side turbos - of which we have only done a few.

All in all one of the longer lasting investments and whenever I'm recommending turbos to people Elite is definitely at the forefront of my mind.

In my mind if you are not going interactive the ideal trainer is a fluid, with a gel on the roller and adjustable resistance.

    Giro Atmos helmet

The second one of these I have owned. Four years old and at the end of its life. Extremely comfortable helmet that you forget you are wearing after a while. Oakleys fit in the vents and that's a huge plus for me. Nothing worse than not having somewhere secure to stick your shades.

The first one of these saved my life. Left side of it significantly caved in when in my 2009 crash.

I have a mongo head, 61-63cm in circumference. Means most helmets size large isn't large enough so that restricts my choice of helmets a bit.

Comfy, light, well vented. Fits massive heads.

    Giro Aeon helmet

After my 2009 crash I had to go out and buy a helmet at full retail. Pricey. About 12 months ago I knew my Atmos was on its last legs so I started looking around for a good deal. I found on in a giro Aeon. Full retail 253 euro. I found one for 110 online so I bought it knowing some day soon I'd need it. Either after another big crash or a series of small ones.

I had thought my Atmos was light. Compared to the Aeon its not.
I had thought my Atmos was well vented. Compared to the Aeon its not.
I had thought my Atmos was comfy. Compared to the Aeon its not.

Lighter, better vented, more comfy. What not to love. Well the fact that shades stuck in the vents are not secure. I have to admit I'd struggle if offered an Aeon or at Atmos. Do not underestimate the ability to stick shades in the vents. I just never got comfortable with putting them on the back of my neck.
