There used be quite a few big mouths around Boards (me being one !) but it's all gotten very quiet recently.

    Why is that ?

Are people making conversation elsewhere or is it just a general lack of interest ?

I'm terrible for starting a thread, only to think "Who actually gives a shit?" half way through and deleting it!

It is quiet, maybe there is not much going on in Ireland these days? I find Tape Op to be a fun forum. Gave up on SOS totally. Gearslutz is good too.

Reaper forums for me. Great active community and good for general music production-y natterings.

Gearslutz too occasionally, but it's fairly depressing there on the whole.

I stole them all. Got about 34k signed up and have around 100-300 chatting online fro all over... and my sites only early beta still ;) - (99% EDM though)

In a year and half should be able to take huge loads and have dedicated room and 'features' for each specialist area.

    busybusy.

    What site is that?

    What site is that?

It's in my signature for free promo - or google music promotion / soundcloud promotion.

It's initially for SoundCloud users at the moment, but the social area will be public eventually (parts of it). It's heavily moderated and trolls ejected with pleasure :)

Eventually there would be dedicated rooms for tech/engineers and resources there available - we have some great plans there for the community (most of which come from the community).

I get the feeling that the downturn has forced a lot of people to sell off their recording gear. Maybe only the diehards have kept going - those who either work in audio full-time or part-time, and/or those need to have grossly expensive wide-bandwidth, low-noise-floor equipment to hand at all times :<

It's not unusual to have lulls in forum activity, though it does seem quite quiet lately.

im still plodding away , getting some decent sounds in my home set up , learnt alot here in doing so

spent the last year mainly improving my bass playing , as i got really into it.

the biggest thing ive learned in my endeavours = melody , groove then lyric is everything .
and no one really gives a ****e how it sounds if these are good

i now record idea after idea and take maybe one out of 50 to a final stage .

some things ive learned for home studios

1/ Superiour drummer with real mic'd cymbals and hats , or at least hats and ride are the best
home studio solution for drum realism

2/ The gsp 1101 guitar processor with the famous custom user cabs are very very good
instead of a miced up amp for low volume or silent recording ( which i found a PITA to do at home )

else the lepou vst simulations are very good for free.

3/ the SM7B is NOT the super great mic for home studio vocals , that they all say it is
in the main a good condenser is.

4/ you can make decent sounds with resaonable preamps - but having one good one makes things way easier.

5/ AD/DA in most consumer home studio devices is good enough not to worry about it.

6/ Cheaper monitors are good enough as long as you treat the room well enough

7/ you dont need expensive plugins to make good recordings- free ones are good enough.

8/ make sure the song is good, and tight .

9/ Nebula EMT 150 plate reverb is the best VST reverb out there .

if i ever finish a tune that i actually like - will put it up

I still check in now and again, but am a boring s**t and also suffer from the same syndrome as Niall. I have been stuck over at groupdiy this past while as I have a couple of builds in progress and wanting to get them done sometime soon.

    That's a pity peter05 - because I find your posts really interesting.

+1 to DaDumTish on Superior Drummer & his comments on gear in general.

As a complete newbie (3 or 4 years ago) I had a very steep learning curve getting to know the basics of recording & mixing. I relied on this forum a lot during those first few years & found it invaluable. I finally got to the point where my sound was decent enough not to detract from the songs themselves. I doubt I'll ever get a really professional sound though. I've never been a big fan of the technical side of things & consider it a neccessary evil if I want to record my own songs by myself.

I still keep an eye on the board, but I've been concentrating more on song writing & musicianship for the past few months. Since my sound has improved enough, it has now exposed my playing. Now I need to work on my songwriting & musicianship.

    Argh... it never ends

The problem I found with the forum is that it turned into "here's a link to some random sound thing" lets discuss and moved away from more common issues that people are having etc. Thats my thoughts anyhow.

I've found some interesting items and most recently the acoustic treatment treads have help me get mine in order and I took it on DIY style!!!!! The new studio is almost finished so maybe I'll have new treads to start as I find I've made a mess of something!

There was a good spell a while back when Neurojazz was making people wake up and think, go to work, think, go home, think, wake up and think when he was running competitions in the electronic forum. Outside weekends too busy to create these days.

    ;)

Very busy - but all for a good cause :) - Just about to start live streaming Q&A sessions for EDM very soon :)

Probably in about 4-6 months I should be able to bring some competitions back with some great prizes (or even just cash) as an incentive and give out some resources for learning more.

The productivity I have to admire. Forget EDM, it's way past its due date. 2013 Depeche Mode, 1960's Joan Baez and Mexican bandito running from the law music, if than can be accounted for in a DAW ;)

I quit the internet for a few weeks. Went to medical school. This time two years, I'll be qualified.
