Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

NZ - Skilled Migrant Vs Work to Residence, SM seems obvious choice?

Just looking at the Immigration/Visa options again, Im still not getting the point of the W2R Visa, it seems more restrictive than the Skill Migrant Visa while also being for a "lesser" status Visa (ie not Residence up front like SM offers):

    Skill Migrant Visa
Migrant focused, technically you dont even need a job offer
Points based via an Expression of Interest ((EOI)
Need over 140 to be selected "automatically" or 100-139 with a skilled job/offer for general random pool selection but at a priority.
"Skilled Job" is lots of things, including IT jobs, which we have in abundance.
155 points are possible with qualification (though I cannot get mine accepted), over 140 are quite possible with Skilled Job (for 12mths) offer or existing shorter term Skilled Employment in NZ.
If Selected from the EOI pool, you provide details per your points claims and they do one of three things:
    - Offer Residence
    - Offer Work Visa which gets turned to Residence when you get a job
    - Decline Residence (presumably as they dont like something on your application etc).
-- After Approval, you only have to stay in the job for 3mths.

Recent improvements to their process promise faster turnarounds (than before) on this Visa too.

    Work to Residence Visa
    Employer Focused, requiring Employer Support
Job Offer must be for 2years
Employer must fill out Form 1113 themselves, which looks a bit off putting as it makes it clear they need to show they couldnt hire local.
Most importantly you can only apply for Residency after 2years on the W2R Visa, you have to stay on the restrictive Work Visa during this period.

The actual job you can take is pretty much the same as the SM Visa (Long Term Shortage lists etc).. so why would anyone opt for W2R over SM? Am I missing something?

I think at the stage it's at currently it's much easer and straight forward to get the SM Visa, maybe in the past it wouldn't have been with higher points and a more restricted skill list.

It's the obvious choice if accepted. The other thing of note is you need to pass a full health check, I'm not sure if you need that for the other one as we went SM

PS you'll love it: big cars with BIG engines :)
