I get anchovies in Aldi in the UK, so I'd imagine they have them in Ireland...

Lidl sell Tate and Lyle or whatever its called icing sugar in a white box

I imagine Lidl since they have such a small floor space only stock what a majority of people want

If Lidl don't sell it I convince myself it means I don't need it

I can buy icing sugar in Aldi here too!

There's very little that I can't get, apart from branded goods obviously. It's odd that they'd stock different products between the two countries when they're so similar.

Aldi definitely stock anchovies, it's the only place I buy them from & the price diff compared to the other shops is huge!

Aldi do them , about 50 c cheaper than Tesco where the price has gone up from 109 to 129 c in approx 6 months

I have looked for anchovies at least three times in my local Aldi which is quite a large Aldi and they never have them. Maybe some stores stock them.

Lidl sell them at €40/kg in a nice jar - €4.99 for 126g - Hand filleted and marinated in pure olive oil.

anchovies are awesome. use them to add a lovely saltiness to stews, to dauphainese potatoes, in a salsa verde ..... or just eat them

  • Registered Users Posts: 746 ✭✭✭ladypip

You can use them in the base of a creamy chicken sauce or in the sauce part of a chicken pie, they add a lovely dimension to the flavour.

    Thai green curry paste.

The magic ingredient in an Arrabbiata sauce. Add a filet with the garlic and it dissolves into the sauce. Mind your salting after, though. Can be used in any sauce really to give a big dose of umami.

Lack of puff pastry was another annoyance at Lidl but lo and behold I spotted it today in the fresh dairy section by the milk/cream. Happy. (now go out and buy it so they keep it in stock!)

pasta a la puttanesca......or whores pasta....

black olives, capers and anchovies with some passata. just fry two or three of those beauties in oil and they will disintegrate into the oil and give real depth to a dish....throw in some garlic and maybe even a bit of chilli....followed by olives and capers.

I could hook this dish up in the time it takes to cook the pasta....

    hungry now....

Omnishambles99, this thread is ancient so I'm going to close it. We have current Aldi and Lidl threads running, so please feel free to join in with them :)
