    Hi all,
At 9.30 tonight I started to download a programme (On Demand) via the wireless connector. The programme is 45 minutes in duration. So far it's taken one hour twenty five minutes to download 49% of the programme! I even tried to see if I could start to watch what was downloaded so far, but it wouldn't allow me. I'm not a technical person but surely that's a long time to wait for it to download, or is that a normal for downloading a programme 'On Demand?.

What speed is your internet connection?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 548 ✭✭✭Wils110

Min 2 meg is recomended for download

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,086 ✭✭✭markc1184

I've never had to wait for downloading more than 2 or 3 mins. My Eircom connection is not great, usually around 3.5/3.7 Mbps. It starts downloading and after about 2 minutes it will say available so I can start watching while the rest is still being downloaded.

    Hi Hellboy99,

3meg, though I have noticed it has slowed down over the last few weeks.

Just before I switched from Vodafone to Sky in January I ran a speed test and the result:

    Download speed: 1.50Mbps
    Upload speed: 202Kbps
    Ping: 102Ms

Over the last few weeks I ran speed tests with the following results:

    23/2

    Download speed: 0.77
    Upload speed: 0.18
    Ping: 95

    10/03
    Download speed: 1.05
    Upload speed: 0.18
    Ping: 89

    17/3
    Download speed: 0.63
    Upload speed: 0.12
    Ping: 115

    22/03
    Download speed: 1.04
    Upload speed: 0.21
    Ping: 88

    31/03
    Download speed: 0.86
    Upload speed: 0.21
    Ping: 89

    2pm Today:
    Download speed: 0.97
    Upload speed: 0.20
    Ping: 104

Before I put that call into Sky, any advice as to what I can or should be doing to improve my speed would be appreciated .... as stated in my post I am completely non technical where this is concerned.

    Thanks

Im not into the technical stuff either but a couple of little points. Make sure the modem is connected to the main phone socket. You could reset it by pressing and holding in the button on the back for about 15 seconds. If its a wireless connection from the modem to the PC try using an ethernet cable instead - you would have got one of those with the modem.

Just availed of this offer as well, tried to charge me €12.99 but asked if there was any offers at the moment.

Got the wireless connector and Sky movies free for 2 months.

    Thanks OP.

I ordered the WiFi connector and was charged the full rate... asked about getting it free but since i pay them a lot of money for everything i am not entitled to it free. Roll on the end of the contract.

Re. the free movies - not impressed with the selection. Anything I'm interested in watching is on the pay channels. I have recorded a few but if I cancel my month's trial will these recordings still be there for me to watch or will they be unavailable?

Another silly question :o. On Sky Movies when I select Sky Premiere it asks me for my pin number? If I enter it will they charge me? I haven't entered it as I'm guessing its a pay per view channel like Sky Box Office. Is this correct?

No this is to prevent minors from watching films unsuitable for them. After the watershed, the same film no longer requires a pin

Our contract is 93 euro per month and includes movies on 2 boxes....I got the connector for free....doesnt seem to be tonnes of content maybe about only 18 tv box sets but hey its free!

No, the pin entry is for viewing restrictions eg paranormal activity 3 was on this morning at 8am. Its to prevent children from watching inappropiate content. Simply enter your pin which if you haven't changed it should be the last 4 numbers of your viewing card. Sky Box office needs a landline in order to purchase or rent a film and if you haven't a landline connected then it can't ring sky to charge you for a Box Office film. Hope this helps.

And also if you want to change your pin to something handy like four zeros you can do it on sky's website.

Got this and the wireless connector arrived today. Have set it up but the service connection says Fail. Have tried resetting my modem, resetting the wireless connector and resetting the sky HD box but nothing works. Any ideas?

    Thanks

    Folks,

Just a headsup.......... received my bill today from Sky and was not happy.

We are on half price Sky for the year and we took up this offer of sky movies via online. However the system can't add two deals so it cancelled our half price TV.......

I've been onto them and they can't fix it until Monday as their system is down.

    Sorry now but...greedy barsteward! ;)

If you'd read the thread you'd have seen countless people saying that offers can't be stacked.

Yeah same happened to me. Rang them yesterday when I got home and they said they couldnt do anything so told them to put me through to cancellations and I went to cancel my tv sub. They sorted it out there and then.
Movies gone but back to my discounted sub and still have the free wireless connector.

I know a lot of people who couldnt get them stacked over the phone signed for the deal online, so beware.

Does anyone know if it's possible to hack the wireless connector for use with a regular PC ?

Not so much hack, but it is just a wireless bridge, so once you set it up, anything you plug into the ethernet port on it is connected through wifi.

As the Sky hub doesn't support WDS with the apple airport express, I had no way of wirelessly connecting my xbox to the sky hub.. got one of the sky wireless connectors, set it up through the sky box then plugged my xbox into it and it's back online. :)

My sky box is already configured with my network so if i plug it into my computer it will give it WiFi and connect to my network?

Not entirely sure what you are trying to do. So will go through possibilities.

If you plug your skybox into your broadband router via Ethernet cable it is connected to the net.
If you plug skybox into the sky wireless adapter it will be connected to net via wifi (assuming you have wifi in place to connect to!)
If you plug your pc via Ethernet cable into your broadband router, it has will connect to Internet.
If you plug your pc into the pre configured sky wireless adapter, it will connect to net via your wireless network
(Assuming you have one in place to connect to!)

Plugging your skybox into your pc will not connect your pc to the Internet.

    Didn't see your last post there but I tried it anyway and;
    It worked!
Strange though my speeds have always been around 6mb but now when I did a test it said 2..
    But it works!
Edit: It was the adapter that limited the speed.

Got this letter from them today. Am i right in the way i read this, thinking I have to cancel movies at the right time, or i face either paying for this month, or being stuck with it an extra month?
Still happy with my Connector. :D On demand.

Although, they gave me the newer Sky HD box free, (looks identical to the other one) I'm not yet used to the menu, not sure i like it.. ;)
    Dear *******,
We're happy to confirm your Sky TV Account will be reinstated from 28/03/2013. We hope you'll enjoy all the new programmes coming your way in the coming months ahead.

    Confirming your Sky Package

There's some important information you need to know before your Sky service start again.

Because you're reinstating your Sky TV, it means you will soon be able to watch Entertainment Extra with Movies for €63.00 per month (although these prices may vary depending on your subscription contract).

With your current special offer, your monthly charge will be €35.00 until your offer ends. It's a condition of this offer that you remain on your chosen Sky TV package for the full offer period. If you decide to change your package during this time you'll have to pay the full standard price for your package.

    Your next payment

Your next payment will be for €35.01. This amount may look a bit odd if you're reinstating your Sky TV mid-month because it reflects the length of time between your reinstatement and the date payments for your subscription are due to be made.

As you are going to pay by Direct Debit/Credit Card your payment will be collected from your account on, or just after, 15/04/2013.

    Confirming what you've ordered

We've set out what you've ordered below, so you can check and confirm for yourself it's what you want.

    Details -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Price
    ===========================
    Wireless Connector -- -- -- - Nil
    Total Price: - -- -- -- -- -- - €0.00

If you want to enjoy the amazing picture quality of Sky's high definition service, Sky HD, then you'll also need to take the HD Pack and have a HD Ready TV.

Yup, basically at the end of the first month you ring up to cancel and then you apparently get the cancellation month free too. Also, €35.01? Those evil feckers charging an extra cent :P

Yep, I've a reminder in my phone for the next Monday (signed up on 22nd March).

Watched maybe 2 films on it... same movies over and over and over!

Only Sky Greats is worth a watch IMO..

I haven't watched any yet. I have been availing of the Sky Rewards, however. A few colleagues have got to see Pierce Brosnan in his latest thriller rom-com. :)

Thanks for reminder. Was very happy to have sky movies over Easter hols with two kids, (sick for first half of them). Good few movies we had not seen. Am seriously thinking of holding onto it but the €63 pm is too much right now.

Sorted. Was because I was already on the half price offer and the system couldn't handle both. So if you're on the half price offer, you may want to check to make sure you weren't charged

  • Registered Users Posts: 454 ✭✭GK1001

    Serenity now...serenity now...

Just off the phone with sky there, everything going perfectly up until he told me that due to the downgrade on my account I would be taken off the price freeze offer and my monthly bill would be increasing by 2 euro.

I tend not to lose my sh1t in these situations so I was polite enough in inquiring how an offer of 2 months free movies could be considered an upgrade to my account and it's subsequent cancellation be deemed a downgrade, however he was unwaivering in his repetition of the fact that it is in the terms and conditions.

I expressed my disappointment and let him know that I believed this practice was highly disingenouous and asked to speak to a manager.

I was put on hold for a few minute, only for the man to come back and say his manager has agreed to waive the additional 2 euro, and to consider the goodwill Sky have shown me in this generous act.

I have a suspicion that the price freeze has not been re-installed on my account and that I will simply have a 2 euro discount on my bill, so any subsequent price increases will have an effect. We will see but at that stage my politeness was wearing dangerously thin and I ended the conversation. For another day perhaps.

    Beware

Just off (still on, but typing thinking ahead :) ) the phone from Sky - friendly and polite dublin call center guy tried his best to get me to keep or to sign up to some other movies package etc, but with a lot of polite to and fro he agreed to take the movies out, and then he mentioned the price freeze going away and how it would cost me 7 euros more every month. I was surprised (hadn't see the post above) and he was totally cool about it though and understood that I was not told about it when I signed up for this, went away for a moment, came back and said he would keep the price promise going forward too. Absolute gent.

I didn't think I would ever say this (being Indian myself), but dealing with local Dublin call center has been a real pleasure so far (sky broadband, this movies deal etc). :D

Anyone had any problems with their bill this month?

Mine came in at about €9 more than it should be.

One phone call later & it's because the 'price freeze' was removed off my account due to the free movies.

Had discussed this on the 22nd April when I phoned to cancel & was assured that it would be reinstated.

Sadly the agent today told me that there appears to be an IT issue with the reapplied price freeze & the techie guys will have to sort it.

I have to call them next week to check on progress!!!

Not a great service from Sky...why remove a price freeze just because a customer avails of a special offer??

    It's just a tad sneaky!

It was only reapplied because when I called them I checked it with the agent as a result of the comments on this thread. :)

Sky knew they hadn't advised me that this would happen so the agent said he would put it back immediately.

The agents were all lovely & it was a pleasant experience but I really don't like Sky's tactics!

Same thing happened to me with the price freeze. They told me this when I phoned to cancel the movies and I said that wasn't part of the deal and they said they'd reinstall the price freeze, but they haven't. Really dodgy underhanded stuff here.
