    Hi all.

    i got a Dell Studio XPS 8100 here
    with a I7 860 2.80Ghz processor

    i was expecting a higher rating from the WEI
    but its sitting around 5.4

    the processor is the lowest rated section.

    is that normal?
    i thought this was top shelf?

    The WEI is a joke, so I wouldn't get too worried about it. My core i5 3350p scores 7.5! (Win 8)

    Sorry to break the bad news but the Core i7 860 is anything but "top shelf" (a current Core i5 3570K is about 30% faster than this old clunker) although a WEI CPU score of 5.4 is well below par.

    Run Geekbench and check your results against other systems with the same processor.

    its about 1/3 of what other I7 860 users are getting running 64bit windows 7

    im really confused........

    im not the type of person to get hung up on this stuff, but when i buy something and spend a few hundred on it i expect it to be as good as its supposed to be, otherwise im returning it.

    yes i bought it as a refurb from a company posting on adverts.
    it came with 1tb HD, 8megs of Ram and ATI Radeon 5700

    i paid €550
    i still have my receipt etc..

    i mean i generally don't get into spec too much and this is the first "good" desktop that i've purchased.
    i bought it on Tuesday.
    it seemed like a clean install of windows 7. i.e. it had nothing installed except windows 7.

    i have no hesitation returning it but i would really like to know for sure that there is a problem instead of saying "i think"

    is there any kind of limiter on the speed of processors i can check, or something in the bios?

    For best results you would want to run a processor benchmark on a clean installation, tweaked for performance.

    Run the benchmark after a restart, make sure nothing else is running, i.e. a virus scan.

    Plenty programs tend to start with Windows when booted regularly. You might run the test in safe mode and see if there's a noticable difference.

    Poor performance can have many reasons, mostly software related but faulty hardware should not be ruled out.

    Yes, and do not run any other programs while the test is in progress.

    Then boot into safe mode (hit F8 right after the Dell logo to call up the Windows boot selection menu) and run the test again.

    OK, let's find out at which speed your processor is actually running. Download and run CPU-Z.

    It should report ~2800 MHz but could be throttled to ~1200 MHz (the blessings of Intel SpeedStep Technology). ;)

    That seems to be OK, multiplier is at 20 (though 21 woud be max in non-turbo mode). I thought it might be running at max power efficiency (9x/1.2 GHz). I'm really at a loss here now but something doesn't seem right (my Core i3 2120 scores 6352). Try another processor benchmark, wPrime 2.09 (use 32M) and compare the result to similar systems.

    ok i ran wprime,
    not really sure what the result is that im looking for

    im assuming its the "time" it took.

    my computer scores 59 secs

    compared to other simiiliar machines
    they scored from 5 to 6 secs.

    like i said though not sure what im looking at. also i couldn't upload my score...

    you mentioned the intel speedstep technology, is that still a possible issue you think? i see it listed in the Bios as being enabled.
    i turned it off and ran geekbench again, but i scored something like 2500.

    ok, enough is enough i think, i'll be returning this tomorrow. the man was very nice and said he had no problem with returns but i would like to be able to give him a reason as to why im returning it.

    why am i returning it?

    the processor is way under performing?
    what is the correct phrasing for this type of fault?

    the processor is faulty, is that a reason these days?

    Mind you, I only selected the top 20, this program is often used by overclockers, so expect the top scores to be from heavily "tuned" systems. But 59 sec is way out of character.

    Again, this could be software issue, chipset drivers for example, or faulty memory crippling the performance. It is hard to tell without proper diagnosis.

    there seems to be an underlying software or hardware issue that's crippling the performance.

    it is operating at approximately half of its expected capacity.

    If you want, grab UBCD or Hiren's Boot CD, both have a couple of benchmark utilities you can run outside Windows and then google for results of comparable computers.

    to be honest, i shouldn't have to go to this trouble from a machine i just bought. i have hirens boot cd here though and i may give it a spin in the morning.

    Bring back the PC and get your money back. Its not a great PC, processor is old at all and the graphics card is pretty bad. Its not worth 550 euro.

    Have you seen the building and upgrading section on boards. You can build an excellent PC for 600 with excellent componenets. People here buy from hardware versand and they'll put all the parts together for you for 20 euro.

    The XPS 8100 was never meant to a gaming computer to begin with. When DELL bought Alienware, they downgraded the XPS range to multimedia computers.

    your core speed is only running at 1196 at a multiplier of 9. You need to up the multiplier in the bios to 20.0 or 20.5 or set it back to default

    just ran through the bios again to see if i could see a setting for the multiplier, alas i couldn't find it.
