I think the majority of people are being too harsh on the op.

It's one thing to say "dont judge a book by its cover" or "Tarnish everyone with the same brush" - But then there is flat out ignoring the fact there ARE alot of scumbag junkies out there.

It's just so fucking naive and stupid to turn around and have the attitude of "how do you know they are scumbags, because they wear tracksuits?" ... We all know the type the op is talking about. Strung out, tracksuit wearing, teeth-blackened, scumbag junkies.

But what? we can't call them "scumbags"? I am judging a book by its cover?

This will never work for wannabe criminals drug addicts and the like and here's the reason why.

They'll be given community employment, they will either fock it up or just not bother turning up. Then they will lose their dole, turn to crime, sent to prison and cost the state more.

    Ridiculous idea.

    Next.

    Education

Commital to a state sponsored Heroin dispensary until dead or off the gear,

    Forced Labour,

    Chemical Sterilisation,

    Euthenasia

    Religion?

They are not all scumbags, some of them are genuinely just down on their luck and are homeless and the only clothing they have is a hat and a tracksuit.

It's people like you that i despise, with the judgement you have for fellow citizens. They are not all scumbags.

    eh no, they are scumbags.

It does seem to be more obvious now than before, I think in part its been centralised. Some of the scummers didn't used to come into town but with the advent of the Luas they can travel around more easily. They also seem to like to hang out at or close to red line luas stops.

Always has been. I was offered heroin outside The Globe in daylight in 1989.

is just a hitch, maybe a cultural rut. And it carries a stigma, after all this time and this dispirited people just don't know how else to be... what next, maybe in the style of tron, or prodijig?

but if all avenues really have bn exhausted, at least there is a rch history of taste and style I know I can always fall back on. And always, with a nod to the future

Well there are an array of scumbags really some happen to be junkies. At least they have a reason for being scumbags. There are a lot of people who just do what they like, not because they're feeding a habit just because they feel entitled to do whatever they want In addition, there are the feral kids making a nuisance of themselves in shops, on public transport and generally

I have actually seen that myself. It was 8am and they were at the mouth of the lane beside lush that connects onto Henry st.

Yeah, maybe I was oblivious to it first time I lived here or I didn't pass by the worst areas so regularly
I remember whenever my family visited Dublin in the '80s my Dad would take the sparkplugs out of the car in the hope it wouldn't be stolen and my mother spoke at length about handbag snatchers.

I pass by Amiens St every day on my way to work and Temple Bar on the way home and there can be 5-10-15 unsavoury types around together.

Naturally, when I lived in London I saw some scummy types but I definitely did not see anything like that.
There are very often groups of them drinking on Townsend St , Burgh Quay, on the steps by The Merchant's Arch, the square by Store St, various alleyways in Temple Bar and the most popular area of all Abbey St - Marlborough St never a time of day where there aren't dodgy types going about their business there.

Add to that a whole heap of people begging and then other people loitering, littering, urinating, spitting and it adds up to a grim spectacle. Overall it doesn't ruin my day but it can be very incongruous seeing someone passed out in the middle of the day or early evening in such public places. It is also still weird to me getting the Luas at rush hour and in amongst the people on their smart phones there are people already drunk / drugged up on board.

As I say previously I'd see them hang out in places like the park beside Christchurch or Stephen's Green and Dr Quirkeys used to be their Mecca .
I lived on Blessington St so used to walk down O'Connell St and around most days. I definitely still saw scummy types but not the scale and volume of what I pass now.

Some suburban areas seem to have improved and are less dangerous than in the 80s possibly because new people have moved into the area.
Even the dodgy parts of town are funny now as you have luxury apartments around Talbot St, Gardiner St etc. I do remember seeing burnt out cars on Gardiner St when I visited Dublin in the 90s. However, the people living in those apartments have to contend with people relieving themselves in every sense of the word on their doorsteps. So, I'm not sure I think the same scummy behaviour has always existed but some of it has moved from the suburbs, parks and buses to more central streets.

I happen to remember a time when wearing a tracksuit other than going to the gym or football match etc. was ok and ponses who said it wasn't were frowned upon.

    Those days are gone :)

I even remember a time you could wear a cap anyway you wanted and it was ok. Even if you did feel a slight show off should you put it on backwards.

Get over yourself people. Dublin is not that bad. I'd be more worried about the lack of amenities there are to be honest.

Certain element of cop-on always helps which is so clearly lacked by so many.

I don't know about scumbags increasing but I do no heroin use is on the rise. Heroin use is a lot more visible than say coke use, which used to be the drug of choice for these people. By the way this isn't just a Dublin thing, it's all over the midlands as well, possibly the country. You go through any midlands town on dole day and you'll see it, swear you were in Dublin.

And don't they get the dole? Surely they could save 120 a week and get themselves a place to live after a month or two.

I thought homeless people couldn't get Dole? Do you not need to have an address first to receive social welfare???

TBH I've seen that kinda thing myself IP and not only once. Around the GPO seems to be a fave spot for some odd reason.

But no I don't see much change in the level of addicts and the like over the last 20 years in Dublin anyway. In fact IMHO it's better than it was back in the 80's when there were far fewer facilities. Heroin was certainly more public an issue anyway. I have heard from people from outside the cities say they've noticed an increase of drugs in the smaller towns over the years.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Always find it strange how many people who are appalled at " junkies " are the very same who socialise in fancy places where coke is acceptable.

Or how those addicted to heroin are vilified, whilst those addicted to drink, gambling or sex get classified as " just a real man's man "

I would go so far as to say addictions are part of most people's lives either directly or via family, and to refer to someone as " junk " says more about you than it does the person with a genuine emotional illness. ;)

Dublin is no worse nor better than it was 10 years ago. I find the 'junkies' are usually harmless it's the little scobes that I'd be more worried about robbing me etc

Did Ireland always have scumbags or is the situation getting worse year by year. Hate walking around dublin and you see heroin addicts, scumbags with their tracksuits and there hats at 90 degree angle. It seems to be getting worse year by year. You just know by looking at the person that there going to be on the dole for life, shot or put in prison. Yesterday I walked past a junkie taking a dump on a footpath. The amount of human ****e around dublin is disgusting
We've always had scumbags it's just that in the past they used to dress better.

Because middle-class people, whether they're on booze, coke or whatever, don't lie down on Nassau St. in the middle of the day begging every person they see for money, treat the street like a toilet and intimidate people going about their business.

I have plenty of sympathy for anyone is such a dire situation, and I think the solution is likely socio-economic rather than judicial, but to pretend like we should react to an office drone's sex addiction the same way we react the a junkie living on the street is quite disingenuous.

They only follow if you show weakness, they're like wolves. Look them in the eye, smile and say "No thank you" and keep walking. They back off every time.

Junkies and scumbags are two different types though, junkies for the most part are just sitting there begging or whatever, its the tracksuit wearing, dog walking with a cane ratfaced fcuks you need to be wary of, come to Limerick, they're a whole different breed down here. the Limerick scobe accent is truly something to behold. "Jaciinntaaaaaaa! have a fag jouuu?!"
