Hi all. I need to convert a video file (roughly 1GB). I'm using Sony Vegas pro 10 and it doesn't accept avi files or mkv files. What's the best converter that will give me 720p or will keep to the same quality as the video, that is able to convert large files but not taking up too much memory? Cheers.

    Handbrakes good.

MKV back to MP4. Not sure about accepting AVI, think they dropped it.

WinFF... use the built-in presets or make your own. Also available as portable (doesn't require installation, doesn't write to the Windows Registry). FOSS (free open sauce software). ;)

It works fine with .avi's. They also have a beta opencl version which i tried out last week - didnt notice any difference to be honest but i only have a HD6770. It did have an option to rip straight from dvd which i dont think was in the main version last time i used it.

Handbrake is FREE, and works fine on MKV, avi videos convertings.

Besides, I got an aneesoft VC pro from giveawayoftheday, also works nice on MKV, avi, flv conversions(it's not free, but I got free from the giveaway site)

    Command line tool: http://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds/

    Simple example (not tested):
    ffmpeg -i video_orig.avi video_output.mpg

ffmpeg will convert from and to pretty much any media format under the sun (except a few proprietary ones, such as lossless WMA, for wich I'm using dbPowerAmp).

WinFF (and X-WinFF, the portable version), which I posted above, is a GUI for ffmpeg, for those who are too lazy for the command line stuff. Not only is it very easy to use, it is also highly customizable (via presets). And it does not contain any spy/adware like most of these "FreeSh*tConverters" out there.
