    Morrissey (Still) Matter?

Morrissey will be Celebrated at the Sugar Club with very Special Guests:
    GIRL IN A COMA

The name Morrissey conjures up many things. He is renowned for being miserable, controversial, depressed. He has been called the Pope of Mope. He is a devoted follower of Oscar Wilde. He has written some of the most memorable lyrics ever as leader of The Smiths and as a solo Artiste. From ‘Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now’ to ‘Every Day is Like Sunday’ Morrissey captures the darker side of life with his tongue firmly in cheek. His bequiffed fans are some of the most devoted on the planet. Still without a record label, Morrissey’s gigs sell out in a matter of minutes. On Wednesday April 17th a panel of experts will assemble at Dublin’s most intimate venue The Sugar Club on Lower Leeson St to discuss and celebrate the phenomenon that is Morrissey. There will be bands, DJS and a panel of Morrissey experts.

Why Does Morrissey (Still) Matter? will feature a number of Morrissey experts on the panel including Stuart Clark (Hot Press) and Dr. Eoin Devereux (University of Limerick and co-editor of Morrissey: Fandom, Representations and Identities). Dr. Eoin Devereux was a panellist at Smithsfest 2013 and has co-organised symposia on David Bowie, Morrissey and The Smiths.

The event’s very special guests will be GIRL IN A COMA. GIRL IN A COMA are an amazing all girl punk band from San Antonio, Texas. They have toured with Morrissey and have been produced by Morrissey’s guitarist and band leader Boz Boorer. GIRL IN A COMA will play a full set following their appearance at RIOT GRRRL: A Symposium on Women and Rock Music being held in Limerick the day before. San Antonio’s GIRL IN A COMA have left a permanent tattoo on the hearts of thousands with their piercing songs and nuclear performances. They’ve blazed a singular trail since Nina Diaz joined the band at age 13 and have found champions and comrades along the way including Joan Jett who signed them, Morrissey, Sia, Tegan and Sara, The Pogues and Amanda Palmer who have hand selected them for tours. They have been the featured band on True Colors, the LGBT-supporting travelling festival in the USA. On April 19th the band are headlining at L-Beach in Germany which is Europe’s largest all women indoor festival.

In addition, Robert Rodriguez asked them to compose one of the key songs for his film Machete last year. All the while, they have been building one of the most impassioned and diverse fan bases in music. GIRL IN A COMA are that rare feral band, unaffected by trends, that has managed to stay wild and thrill us at every turn. Exits & All the Rest, their 4th album released in late 2011 on Blackheart Records, is the most heart-stopping turn yet. Si and True Colors, the LGBT-supporting travelling festival.

Fans of Morrissey and The Smiths will also be charmed by the appearance of Lee Brady and Gavin Murphy who are the Voice and Guitar of the best Morrissey/Smiths tribute act in the world. They will support GIRL IN A COMA and play an unplugged set of Morrissey’s best tunes. As if that was not enough a host of dublin DJs including Paul Webb will spin the best of Morrissey and The Smiths until very late.
