I just typed "passport expi" into google.ie, it popped up a recommendation of "Passport expiry for USA", the very first hit of which was exactly the answer you need.

I'd ignore Google and ask my question on a random message-board in the faint hope that someone would respond.

    Shouldn't be, and yes.

Thanks for replies. Didnt realise this was a 'random' message board. Is it not for queries relating to travel to the US??

Your passport only needs to be valid for the length of your stay.

Your passport actually has to be valid 6 months after you come back

This. Definitely renew your passport. It has to be valid for six months after your return date for the US, I think it's 3 months for Europe.

I cant find any info on the embassy site about the 6 months validity after i return but i think i will go ahead and renew now to be safe

Its common knowledge if you ring a travel agent or the airline they will tell you the same thing

    This is correct.
See OP, if you'd gone to find the information yourself you'd have got non-conflicting information. Now can you find me a link to confirm my view?

See OP!! Why would i want to see my own post again??

You're talking BS, read that link to the US Embassy website again. In particular, can I refer you to the last sentence in the first paragraph....

An Irish passport need remain valid only for the duration of the holder's stay in the United States.

I went to the US for Thanksgiving in November 2011 with a passport that expired in Jan 2012, had no issue whatsoever and the agent at US Immigration in Dublin airport didn't even remark on it.

As long as you GTF out of the US before your passport expires there is no issue.

    This is not.

Ireland is one of the countries exempt from the 6 month rule.
You will not have any issues. I've 1st hand experience of this just like another poster in the thread.
