Spreading is a dying trade to be frank about it, it's far more convenient to just have a dry-lining crew tape and deck and be off. Also the wet trades are also those with the fiercest amount of competition and the rates are nothing like they used to be. I've heard of brickies getting £90 a day which is what labourers used to get back in the day. However construction does seem to be picking up a bit and I think it'll tip along nicely in London for a while so you should manage to get something. Don't just land over half-cocked though as the construction game is fickle at the best of times.
