Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Should the office of the President of Ireland be reformed in such a way so that he/she would have a degree of more political power, influence and responsibility?

Yes or No? and as always stimulating debate is appreciated!!

    Thanks!! =]

Can't understand the need to put so much power in the hands of one man unless it's Michael O'Leary

I think they should have more power but just wonder if, they refusing to use the power they have or were they stopped or gagged by Government? I think they should be more in the public and given more freedom to speak out on issues.

Is it possible with the right person in the park we could actually have a leader/head of state people might respect and admire for being more challenging and outspoken?

they're above government and supposed to be able to keep government in check so how did we let things slip so far that the president can be kept in check??

No, it's an apolitical role and it should remain that way. The president is there to represent that country, as a whole, encompassing all political classes.

I would prefer a total revamp of govt along the lines of the US model where the president and his team are the executive branch of govt. leave the dail to legislate and leave the president to lead.

Where did you get that idea from? "...keep the government in check"???

The president's role is extremely limited because that's what the constitution says it is. The only possible "check" that the President can put on the government is to refer bills to the Supreme Court under Article 26, and that doesn't include Finance Acts. And don't tell me refusing a dissolution of the Dail is a power.
