To be fair to the Indo (which I hate), they couldn't report this stuff if it wasn't happening.
A number of people shouted, "shame, shame" and, "disgrace" while the Taoiseach made his way from an event at the Tower Hotel in Waterford towards the new Medieval Museum.

Reports that Mr Kenny was spat upon were discounted by gardai and organisers of the anti-austerity, anti-property tax protest.

Gardai said splashes from a cup of coffee held by one of the protesters may have landed on the Taoiseach's jacket.

One man shouted, "get the f**k out of Waterford".

The group, numbering around 20 people, remained outside the museum while speeches were made marking its opening.

'Fighting for every job' includes protesting at the opening of a new local employer and tourist attraction? And I think I know who threw coffee at Inda...

I know the lady in the picture, worked with her a little in college for the political societies and found her pleasant and nice to deal with but she would be a socialists IIRC and is big into it as you can see. They have the stand outside Georges Court throughout the summer asking for signatures on various issues and when the household charge was brought it in they were out in numbers for several weeks asking people not to pay.

The protests are daft - its the usual crew every time moaning. Whatever news - good or bad - there out protesting.

I respect anybody's right to protest and the people of Waterford has as much right if not more right than most people.

Whoever cant the organisers not see the big picture here. Yesterday was a positive day for the city, yes we are still very much in the red on the balance of things but that doesnt change the fact we should be seen as embracing this and hoping for more investment.

Lets say for example that whoever want to set up a factory to make widgets and they have two possibilities between here and Cork yesterday's announcement could only go against us.

My main point is by all means protest but pick your battlefields with the whole city in mind. It reminds me very much of the group that decided to try and distrupt the turning on of the christmas lights a while ago. Madness like

... but they could have equally report the good stuff that was happening at the same time, except, they chose to ignore it. Where is the balance and fairness in their reporting?

    Well, here:
Two hundred jobs have been promised by a leading healthcare firm after it announced plans for a new medical devices manufacturing facility.

Nypro Healthcare said it will establish an additional state of the art factory at its Waterford site, with the number of jobs expected to increase in coming years.
    ...and here:
MORE than 200 new jobs at a medical device facility represent part of the "fightback" of Waterford and the southeast following unemployment setbacks in recent years, Taoiseach Enda Kenny has said.

Speaking at the confirmation that Nypro Healthcare is to establish a manufacturing facility at the IDA industrial park in Waterford city, Mr Kenny said it was "a very significant day," with 200 "high-quality jobs" for the city.

Both Mr Kenny and Jobs Minister Richard Bruton travelled to Waterford yesterday for the jobs announcement because, Mr Kenny said, "this Government is unashamedly the most open administration in the context of job creation and opportunities for the people".

Sully, I thought I recognised that woman alright. When that bunch aren't protesting a lack of jobs, they are protesting about the existence of business...

It's a rag, but complaining about it is another classic example of the negativity we see here and in Waterford all the time. There was one story mentioning that Inda was abused and had coffee thrown at him (and whatever you think about the guy, the office deserves some sort of respect). And there were three separate news pages online (one duplicated) about the new jobs at Nypro.

And even though I pointed out the positive stories, you come along and agree that there was no balance. I really don't know.

I worked for Nypro from when it started to when it closed-was a grand place to work to be fair-but,it's fantastic news for Waterford either way,and with the hope that it will have injection moulding facilities on-site-That was one of the reasons it left last time-because we were just on contract from Hewlett-Packard.
But,still, great news for 200 people, and long may they stay here

Interested to see if anyone has been sucessful in gaining employment with these guys, or is recruitment still ongoing?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,265 ✭✭✭..Brian..

Looks to be still higher up jobs be recruited, training coordinators, tool shop mangers etc. I'd say it will be a while yet before the factory is fully up and running and they're looking for general ops etc.

I hope they're ready for the deluge of applications that they'll get.

I'd say half the town will be applying for jobs there.

  • Registered Users Posts: 240 ✭✭tramoreman

checked their website site a good while ago vast majority of the jobs wont be till early 2014.

Think its worth mentioning that a highly automated place like that will be looking for people with qualifications in possibly quality, engineering, GMP, science etc. Get those qualifications lads to get your foot in the door, its a tough market out there with plenty of people to choose from. We need to be smart, part of attracting these companies is ensuring we are a well prepared, motivated and educated work force

    Max Powers is right lads.

    Just an FYI for PPL.

The closing date for CAO applications has passed, I tried to get my brother on one.

However part-time courses are available to sign up till mid Aug.

For Nypro positions I think the below courses are the most applicable:

Higher Certificate in Engineering in Manufacturing Technology (Part Time)
    http://www.wit.ie/courses/school/education/waterford_part_time_evening_courses_life_long_learning/higher_certificate_in_engineering_in_manufacturing_technology_part_time

BEng in Manufacturing Engineering (Part Time)
(Applicants must first have successfully completed the Higher Certificate in Engineering in Manufacturing Technology or equivalent.)

Higher Cert in Science in Good Manufacturing Practice & Technology (Part Time)

BSc in Good Manufacturing Practice and Technology (Part Time)
(Applicants must first have successfully completed the Higher Cert in Science in Good Manufacturing Practice & Technology.)

The only way to gain employment is to educate yourself with the appropriate degree. I have just finished 4 years of chemistry and myself and 75% of my class are now working - since May! Jobs like the ones in nypro are going to be highly automated! I know this as two friends of mine are working there as Automation Engineers since May - they too are graduates of WIT! It's a tough jobs market where the skilled will survive sadly! The days of operators are numbered

True, but plenty of people with Degrees and Masters looking for work too.

The Nypro facility in Waterford in currently under redevelopement with equipment/machinery to be in place before year end. The validation of the equipment and processes are due to then be completed before May of 2014 when full manufacturing is due to commence. Until this time only high up positions, i.e. QA, Engineering, Management etc., will be taken on. Once full manufacturing is ready to start up operators will then be hired (probably around April next year).
I also heard on the grapevine that Nypro have already added aquired another contract and will actually be taking on double the amount of people they had original quoted.

Probly wont be even considered as the highest third level qulification i have is a Higher Certificate. People with masters will be going for jobs here as there is simply noting much out there at the moment

But yet when jobs are lost its the governments fault for not doing anything to keep em

Because usually it's the government putting to much strain and burdens on companies that cause jobs to be lost in the first place.

Don't be so defeatest. You'll be selling yourself and not just a 'masters' or 'degree' or what ever. From experience in big multinational companies, the people with the higher qualifications do not always get the position. Employers try to find a balance of people who, most importantly, will get along rather than how may degrees they have. I've seen lads arrive into jobs with masters degrees and qualifications out their ears but then be socially inept or just not have the personality to integrate or handle the big characters a manufacturing environment throws at them - they last pissing time!

Either they chose the wrong Degree or they refuse to move to work.

Colleges Churning out 1000s of people with crappy pretentious business, marketing and arts Degrees that are no use to anyone dont help anything.

Id rather have a 1 year cert in IT or Pharma than a masters in Arts these days.

My friends son has got a job there, he has his leaving cert. He had to start a 6 month training course in FAS as part of his training for this new job.
I know he was recruited before Christmas, he had bombarded the office in Dublin with emails, phone calls and letters.
He had worked in teva but was made redundant but he is only 23 so he didnt work there long. He also did a forklift drivers course which he thinks was also a big help in getting this new job.
