Was woken this morning by the sound of couching in the hall. It was scarier than any nightmare at this stage :D

Also don't think I've ever paid as much attention to the weather before let alone this one system that may bring strong winds our way.

    Hi

I have been reading through this thread and it has been quite interesting to see everyone's goal times. I have signed up to do the marathon but I have been sick for the last week so I am not sure I will make it now :( my last run was a week ago this was also my longest run of 17.5 miles. I have been running consistently for the last few months have done the race series 10mile and half marathon have also done the athlone half marathon. Just looking for advice on this, have I enough done to make the finish or should I just admit defeat and try again next year?

    Thanks

Now we're being naughty... Let's blame taper madness :)

not getting much done these days.. Checking my pulse every ten minutes with 2 different apps and a monitor. Colleagues seriously worried for my mental health. A little bit sick still but I've blown it way out of proportion in my head... And my pulse is getting faster... Damn heart rate training :(

    Hi al984,

I'm not a moderator or mentor, and I can't advise you on what to do but I can tell you my own situation and I'm still going for it next Monday.
I am a first time marathoner and my longest run has been 18.5 miles, but I've been sick all last week too and am still coughing up the odd bit of green gunk- nice. I also have 3 kids under 5 so I don't get a lot of sleep. I've tried to follow hal higdon novice 1 plan but it has been difficult with work and the kids.
I know it will be very hard next Monday but I also know I can get to 18 or 19 miles. I know from previous races that I can do better on the day with the distractions of the race and the help from the crowd. If I can get to 18 or 19 miles, then I know i can hobble on to the finish even if I'm walking some of it.
I'm a 41 year old man and have been running 3 years. I had asthma as a kid and was a chubby little dude.
Lots of people out there who never had bad health won't understand, but for all the above reasons, I am not going to quit. I have my time in mind, and I know my pace, so I'm gonna go for it.
If you get over your illness, then I'd say go for it, even if you have to do the run walk approach. You've put the hours in, you've done 17.5 miles. Its huge. But if you feel that you are still unwell then don't force it. Just remember that when you're training long distances, then you are prone to illness. And if you decide to postpone until next year, there is no guarantee that the same thing won't happen again.
All i'm saying is that, if you feel your health is good, then don't let a lack of confidence stop you. We can all do more than we think we can, when we're pushed.

I'm not trying to be a dick but if you're coughing up green gunk you should go see your Dr. There is no need to be a hero running DCM as running a marathon is not heroic.... Most collapses in marathons happen when people try to run unwell. You have 3 kids so your health should be your number 1 priority. Also- I train 50-70 miles a week year round and I very rarely get sick, so, no getting sick is not a part of long distance training...

Green Phlegm is a sign of a chest infection, so i would go to the dr and see if you require an anti-biotic. I would ask the Dr about running the marathon, as everyone says your health should be your priority, there will be other marathons.

Thank you for the advice slowandsteady I have been to the doctor today and have anti-biotics he has advised to rest until Monday and see if it clears up. I am just worried by the time Monday arrives it will have been 12 days since I have done any run I will be gutted to miss out after putting in the time and effort. I am just hoping that if I do decide to go ahead I can push to 19 miles on the day and then somehow find the energy to keep going to the end. when I first started training I was hoping for a sub 4hr but now I am just aiming on getting to the start line and finishing.

Green Phlegm is a sign of a chest infection, so i would go to the dr and see if you require an anti-biotic. I would ask the Dr about running the marathon, as everyone says your health should be your priority, there will be other marathons.

The internet Dr already gave his diagnosis ;)

Fair enough- lot of literature to the contrary as regards impact of extended running on the immune system, but everyone is different.
I have dropped out of races in the past if sick, but I also know my own body and know I am fine for this one. Likewise for al984.

Even if the illness clears up I'm still not sure if 17.5 miles is enough to get me around the course especially after not running in the last 12 days

    Thanks
Anyone can finish a marathon even on minimal training as long as you pace it correctly. However being sick is a different matter. If I was you I would think seriously about how much this marathon means to you. At the end of the day it's just a race and if you decided to do a spring marathon you would have a fantastic base behind you.

Green gunk would suggest to me that you have an infection. If you are determined to do the marathon on Monday please take lots of walking breaks and don't overstress yourself. I know you say you'll get to 18 miles no bother but as the saying goes 20 miles is only the halfway point in the marathon and 6 - 8 miles is a hell of a long way when you're suffering!
