Wedding fairs for photographers

I was just wondering if any experienced photographers could shed any light on the mysterious wedding fair. I know you get a stand, what sort of paraphenelia do you use on your stand? And how do you go about finding information on wedding fairs and how to sign up for them?

    Just wondering!

    Thanks.

you need a stand - most of not all wedding fairs simply rent you a space you need to fill it with your own stand !!, you also need examples of your work - usually on TV screens or in print albums....examples of your albums,

Flyers to hand out to people "just browsing" - you need to have a decent sales pitch and willingness to offer on the day discounts...ie. book now and get 10% off or a free parents album.

you need to talk to people and discuss what their needs are as well as keeping people who are walking past interested enough to stay and wait for you to finish with the previous couple. (ie. you need two people there but its too expensive to have two people there)

business cards !! free pens !!, free sweets !!, anything to draw their attention to you !!

so after you've spent thousands on getting ready you then have to reel them in and hope to make enough sales to cover the cost of space rental for the wedding fair !! (which is not normally cheap)

a way to discover wedding fairs would be to select an area/hotel and google the name with "wedding fair" after it - it takes time but will allow you to get an idea on what dates roughly hotels have their wedding fair (there is plenty of overlapping) ...some hotels do a wedding fair in house others use the RDS wedding show (late January or early Feb and Sept I think) to try get people interested.

To be honest - the best way to gain business as a wedding photographer is.... word of mouth, its also the quickest way to fail in business !! ...so the customer is king !! (if you can afford to walk away from a difficult client ...be prepared to do it.... not just financially but the fallout from walking away can extend into various families)
