The drive could be faulty, data cable could be loose,or faulty,

or the motherboard cannot detect the drive,

OR drive is not getting power , loose , or disconnected power cable.

DO not touch the drive pcb, underneath the drive circuit board,
put some tape over it,eg over the pcb, 3x3 inch approx.
OR WEAR a glove when handling the drive.
Touch water taps to get rid of static electricity before opening the case.

maybe borrow another hd ,ide type ,and see is it detected by the pc.

    see picture ,

power cable goes into ide hd,
With red cable on the inside, yellow on the outside,
Make sure power cable is in all the way.

update: just waiting to get someone to have a look at this, but I was wondering if it is the hard drive that's gone, roughly how much would I be looking at to replace it and where's the best place to source one if I need to get one?

Doing it yourself, around €50 for a new drive here *I am assuming your hard disk is a SATA one, remove the old one and confirm this first*. You will need to then get your hands on the Windows re-install media (what version of Windows were you running/is the computer licensed for (this should be written on a sticker attached to the side of the computer with a product key)).
If you hand it in to a repair shop this cost could vary widely, but I think 100+ would be expected, that includes a new hard disk and the installation of Windows/Drivers etc. Do check the old hard disk is plugged in correctly incase the issue is not a faulty disk, just one that has become disconnected/loose for whatever reason

See hd, on the left,TOP picture, thats sata,

    http://www.areema.co.uk/images/IDE_drive.jpg

pic above is older type drive, IDE ,
Pc,s usually have sata,or ide 3.5inch hardrives, for storage, usually held in the frame, case by
4 screws. 2 on each side on the drive.
ITS possible to buy a caddy ,ide,or sata, for the old drive,
    3,5 inch enclosure,
IF you want to try to get data from it.

IF you think old drive may still be working.

You can buy hardrives in peats, maplins,
I buy brands like seagate, or western digital.
Hold on to the receipt for 3 years ,its your gaurantee.
I prefer to buy a drive in a shop, not from a website, or online store.

    See http://www.maplin.co.uk/oem-3.5-inch-ide-hard-drives-97409

IDE= ata , drive ,if you are looking for drives, on a website, or store order form.
Some shops only sell sata type hardrives.

IDE ata drives have a large cable, red stripe on the right side,

    With a yellow,black,red power cable.
