I find the Firebug plugin in Firefox far more superior.

I took great pleasure in doing a couple of the steps (the console ones) with Firebug, after disabling their popup (in Firebug)

I used to use firebug all the time, but when I changed over to using chrome as my primary browser I started using the chrome dev tools and found myself using firebug less and less. I wouldn't say either is a substitute for the other however, but rather they be used in conjunction.

However regardless of the differences, I'd advise students/novices to get to grips with both tools, and just use whichever one they find most comfortable using that achieves what they need it for.
