Limerick prejudice in sindo

So came across an article in the "life" magazine of the Sunday independent. Eilis O'Hanlon, while discussing the purchase of second hand cars came out with this little gem.
LK was excluded for the same reason, as it's well known that everyone from limerick is a criminal. Thats what I tell my kids anyway, to the point that they're now scared if we're driving along and end up being followed by anyone with LK plates. I'm not proud of that, but it is rather funny

Now she's not very complimentary about anyone that doesn't drive a car with a D, MH, WE or KE reg cause "they're basically extended bits of Dublin.

Now I don't know about any of you but I'm pretty damn angry about this comment, and will be writing a letter about this tomorrow.

If this is how she's teaching her children about life I really worry for her children.

LK? She's prejudiced only against people from County Limerick? She's ok with people from the city with L reg plates?

Ah no seriously though, how did this get past an editor?

    Its a joke.

It's a parody piece. She took the piss out of at least 10 other counties (Galway smug, nobody lives in Louth, etc.)

    Pointless article is pointless.

Business woman attacked for third time by house intruders (Independent)

    By Tom Shiel

A Business woman has been attacked for the third time in as many months in her home by intruders.

. . . Community leaders in Castlebar expressed shock and revulsion yesterday evening at the latest incident and said they hoped she would make a full recovery.

There is local speculation that a criminal underworld gang with possible Limerick connections may be involved in the series of attacks on Mrs Sweeney because of her garda connections.

    *********************************************************

Tom Shiel’s recent newspaper article that appeared in the Irish Independent, was probably the most read story nationally on that day.

I was amazed to read that the good people of Castlebar speculated that Limerick people were possibly involved in these shocking assaults in some way or other, without stating any hard facts.

We have enough “real crime” of our own in Limerick that drags the city’s name into the gutter.

We really don't need Mayo People fabricating their own angst-ridden theories and then projecting it on our city through the Irish Independent.

I wonder could Tom Shiel enlighten us on Limerick’s role in this?

You mean there are people who STILL read this poor excuse for cutting down trees?

If enough people stop buying this rag, there won't be many to read the stupidity published within its pages.

I won't loose much sleep over this. It's the Sindo. This isn't even worthy of talking about in a thread imo.

Atrocious excuse for a newspaper, whether the article was meant as a joke or not.

The sad facts are Limerick is a dump full of thugs. Regeneration has made the problems worse, many of these people are better off than the ddecent working people in Limerick who go about their daily lives trying to pay bills.

It's time the people of Limerick admitted we've bigger problems than anywhere else, and if national government keeps sending companies to anywhere but Limerick, well the problems will get worse.

It's too easy for the likes of willie o dea to be claiming this service is cut, and that service is cut, time for politicians to do something for middle class limerick.

Absolute rubbish...the city and county is recording year on year decreases in crime, whilst the rest of the country is experiencing increases in headline crime

You have raised two issues, one you state that the city is a dump (which is an opinion, it can be argued either way). Two, you have stated it is full of thugs, which it seems commit less crime than thugs elsewhere..

Therefore, your "sad facts" aren't facts at all...

    http://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/overall-crime-stats-very-good-says-leading-criminologist-despite-homicide-increase-589603.html

    http://www.limerickleader.ie/news/leader-local/positive-developments-as-crime-figures-fall-in-county-limerick-1-4906576

At a time when over 60 murders a year are committed in this country, we are averaging one a year over the last five years.

By all means express your opinion....but lets not ignore the facts please

What this city really needs is less people that consistently and willingly harm the good name

Keep that up, just what the government wants. Limerick is great, no problems here at all.

    What???
Where did I state we don't have issues?

I have issues with our government, in particular how our city and county are governed, how we have too many state bodies all pulling in different directions to the detriment of the city...I have issues with the size of the poverty industry the government has created not just in Limerick but nationwide...I simply do not have the time nor inclination to list the issues I have with how our country is run...

But I have an even bigger issue with Limerick people who seem hell bent on fueling the tired stereotype of Limerick city and its people...completely unaware it seems that that tired and unjustified stereotype is what is doing the MOST damage

A poor journalist all told but anyone who couldn't spot that as a parody piece probably deserves to be offended.

@SilentCorner, I think Rightwing is having an auld troll, or trying to rise you, in pre-internet terms.

This must be an April Fool as Rightwing is calling themselves a thug; unless of course they have moved out of Limerick, in that case they are an ex-thug. Should there be some family still in Limerick, well be careful folks as Rightwings family are thugs.

I tend to agree with Mr Rightwing about placement strategy for industry, however the unfortunate thing is that our skills are not up to scratch just yet.
For Example employers are not going to employ people to push a button in a factory at a cost of PRSI, tax, and wages etc when they can get them cheaper elsewhere. A bit like buying Mc Vitie`s biscuits in the Milk Market.
Same thing, but cheaper if you go somewhere else.

There are other reasons of course but it is not that everybody thinks we are scum and deserve to rot in Limerick on the dole for eternity.

For a moment I thought you were serious, until you mentioned Willie O`Dea. I must point out that Mr O`Dea has been in opposition since late 2011. It is not his job to tell us that there are cuts coming, it is his job to oppose the cuts that the government want to introduce. At least he should tell us that anyway so we can feel better about somebody watching over the government.

I have an idea for you, make a list of all the things you like about Limerick and make a list of all the things you dislike.
Be honest making the list now.

If by any chance the dislikes outnumber the likes, then you are in the wrong place and you should go somewhere else.
    Somewhere you will be happier.
Somewhere you will feel more motivated to contribute to the community you live in.

    Brian

I'm not trying to rise anyone. Neither am I trying to knock Limerick, but we need to be realistic about it too. As that cop before said, it's an example of a failed society.
Do I like saying that, No. Do I want to say that, No.

But unlike a lot of Limerick people, I won't bury my head in the sand either.

You opening post stated some "sad facts"...that the city is a dump full of thugs...and you claim you are not trying to rise anybody, not knocking Limerick....they weren't even facts!!!....it's your opinion....a massive difference...

I think you'll find nobody has their head in the sand in this city, we are confronted with it every day, we have some serious social issues,(which in my opinion relates to the huge poverty industry in this country) however as I said constantly regurgitating an old stereotype is extremely damaging...even more damaging than the actual crime stats...but that is just my opinion

The irony is that the one's burying their heads in the sands are the one's that believe in that old tired stereotype...

There's no smoke without fire. Limerick has a reputation...there's a reason why.

I'd like to see thugs, not just in Limerick, but everywhere in the country lose their dole if they are caught in crime.

Society is pandering to regeneration this, that and the other.

This article was clearly a poor attempt at a humour piece.

I don't see the point in keeping this thread open as people are only wanting to defend/attack Limerick, we've been down this route a lot in the past.

For what it's worth, I've worked in Limerick for a long time, have played rugby there, have socialised there on many many occasions, had my daughter born there and go shopping there on a nearly weekly basis, I think it's a great place and has some great people/places, yes there has been a lot of bad stories in the press down through the years, but it is far far far away from being full of thugs.
