If I wanted to get a specialist second opinion in the UK, how would I go about this?

If you're living in the UK, you'd still generally have to via your NHS or private GP irrespective of whether it was an NHS funded specialist or to be paid via insurance.

I'm fairly sure it would have to be private unless you were temporarily living in the UK. You'd need a referral from you GP and could then contact the specialist directly.
The HSE occasionally fund care in the UK but AFAIK it would have to be for something not available here.

Yeah, I accept I'd have to pay for it. What the hell, I have to pay for it here.

Would the GP find the specialist or would it be better for me to find them (authored research articles in the particular field) or leave it up to the GP? And would the specialist here have to send my notes to the UK specialist? In which case I could by-pass the GP and tell him about it afterwards.

    Thanks all!

I'd say you'd probably have to find the specialist. The referral could come from your GP or specialist but I'm fairly sure they wouldn't see you direct.
You wouldn't necessarily need old records but the more information they have the better.
