and while many are off on this bank holiday Monday, others are working :(

    Rev,

Just received the Good News letter from Higgins.

    Waste 21cent per kg
    Recycling 11 cent per kg
    Organic 16 cent / kg
Was the Higgins collection today in the Caherslee area on the old scheme or the new pbw scheme or some introductory rate?

I don't think that comes into effect until the 18th April. My bins went out on Tuesday at the old pay as you go rate.

Not looking forward to their new scheme. I saw there is a petition online regarding it, and that Cllr. Sam Locke is to bring the petition to Higgins and has a meeting set up!

I can see some of the argument from their side.
The €30 "in credit" will have to stay as they have no way of knowing how much the lift will cost.
But the €6 standing charge will have to be done away with, it's the same as a Curry's extended warranty in so far as its giving you nothing and is complete profit imo

The €6 standing charge is a complete disincentive to reduce your waste as you might as well use it if your paying for it!

they did say they will be texting customers to let them know the cost of their last bin weights. That €6 will also be taken out of the €30 'credit', so when you need to put the bins out, you need to top back up to the €30 balance, which you would either have to check your online account for or contact them.

But I agree, the €6 needs to go, especially with their 'reasons' for it....which were firstly that it was to pay for their new fleet of trucks, insurance etc...this was on their website, but has since been taken down! Their latest excuse is that its to pay for driving by your house, just in case you have your bin out!???? like seriously, are they for real??

The new scheme €6/mo + per kilo charge is actually cheaper than the old €12.50/lift for medium and light users! And even for heavy users it's still cheaper than kwd. http://www.higginswaste.com/webclient/news/pay-by-weight-average-cost

I've tried to explain this to my pensioner friend but they are not convinced.

I wonder what they have done to the rooms. They were really only basic tourist 2* standard previously reflecting the revenue from the tour bus market.

same thing I heard! The old Buy Lo unit seems a better size unit for them.

The ending of that article needs to be re edited, why was there a need to report about his struggles with addiction?

Very little thought given to the poor man's family or friends who will no doubt read the report.

That's sad. I only saw him in town on Wednesday lunch time. He had a tough life

Named as Eric Leahy. He is a regular in the local Court reports with a ridiculous amount of convictions. OD suspected.

I'd imagine the Buy Lo unit is their fall-back option if they don't get planning permission for the Horan Centre. The Horan Centre is better from a commercial point of view in that the adjacent units generate significant passing trade. People would have to make a conscious decision to drive into the Buy Lo unit, just to visit Iceland. That's why Buy Lo never really took off.

The main reason BuyLo failed was it's business plan.
They were a trade supplier, small hotels, b&b's, businesses. Their location didn't matter, but when the bad times came, business slowed and they tried to drag in the ordinary punter. But we don't need 10kg bags of coffee or 5L tubs of curry sauce, people just cherry picked what they wanted and left.
Shannon, Killarney and then Tralee closed and maybe more since then, I don't know .
Aldi actually brought more people to their door, but not enough spending to save them
I couldn't see Iceland making the same mistake

all the Buy Lo's are gone now. They were owned by the Barry Group who own Costcutters. It was a weird shop!

It appeared to specialise in dog lovers from what I could see with the amount of floor space they dedicated to massive dog food packs! Otherwise their offering was a mixed and not every coherent bag. With big volume packs as noted above mixed in with everyday consumer items.
