Yeah they almost pulled it off too..Always thought Austin Stacks park would make a great venue for a 3 day concert..try and attract one or two big bands. Free up Denny St for the people to watch bands also. Get the taxis out of the mall and get the chip wagons back

Newcastle West are doing one next month! Some fairly decent acts playing too, including UB40, the Stunning, Walking on Cars, Example and lots more!

actually there's no reason why Tralee couldn't do it and no reason why we couldn't have one big act like Duran Duran! it would be great! and yes before someone says, but how do you expect it to be paid for....we know it costs money, but you have to attract the people with some bigger names!!

Thinking of going to that alright..I mean no offence to anybody but its Newcastle West..if they can draw those acts then it really must put a massive spotlight on this Festival committee

agreed, its a good line up, and like you I'm tempted to go to too! I like their pricing structure aswell, very affordable! No offence to the Rose entertainment committee, but I really do wonder who picks the bands! I mean why are they picking Xfactor bands, who barely came top 10 in the competition, haven't released albums, if even a single, and then expect people to come see them? its just strange to me!

Problem with alot of irish acts people wont pay in to see them as they have been around ages and at big events fan may not enjoy them like a proper venue

Its been going downhill fast ever since Guinness pulled out but how many years ago now has that been..cant keep using that as an excuse.
Hate to say it but Tralee has not got a great reputation and that's going on meeting a lot of people from all over the country this weekend.

Tralee's rep is no better or worse than any large town in Ireland. If you look at the "worst towns in Ireland" threads that pop up on boards, we always get mentioned, but never anywhere near top of the pile.
Depends what you focus on I suppose, we have some disadvantaged areas and some proper little scummy fckers here. But compared to other towns and cities our size, very little violent crime and there isn't any area of town I'd be afraid to walk at night.
Having said that, I do accept peoples concerns about the square and the gangs of youths congregating there, its a potential powderkeg if the authorities don't get a handle on it soon

the only problem I had with the festival at night time, was the young teens hanging around the very narrow entrance to the the Brandon carpark, it make it very hard to get through with small kiddies, and I did feel sorry for the 2 gardaí that were there, if anything kicked off they wouldn't have been able to handle it on their own.

Hope the big wheel comes back next year though and it would be nice if the price of the rides came back to 2euro!

Looking at her on the night she wasn't very impressive. She had a voice that could open your head and was more worried about her family and relations in the audience than what daithi was asking her. Of course she came complete with a sob story making it look like X factor.

agreed on that one - but she was better than the Dubai Rose, who left a permanent teaching job to go to Dubai to teach multi national children - my wife looked at me and we both said she's there for the money.

The sob story worked wonders I'd say on the panel - I'd love to see some form of public vote even if it made up 10% of the winners - if she is representing us can we have a say??

and to end my tuppence - I'd like to see even a few months after the event a report or scoring cards or comment cards from the judges as to WHY she was chosen, if the cards were taken from the judges after choosing the winner and held in the rose office and a report compiled by an outsider. I just don't know the criteria of how the winner is chosen.

P.S - She is very pretty though!

PPS - Bring back Maria for a second year!

fair enough, that's your opinion, but generally most people enjoy it both locally and from all over the country. Maybe its just not your thing.

Its been sold from what I hear!

The insurance and construction costs of it must have been phenomenal!

    are you serious Michael?

that should never have been allowed - I loved seeing that, it made the festival for me - you could see it miles away, all lit up and turning.

If I ever make a million I'm buying it back along with the Mexican Hat!

Exactly, I agree totally. There's nowhere in Tralee I feel unsafe, never has been. Its unfair to say its an unsafe town, there are worse! As you say, there are a minority of little sh*ts hanging around the town centre who are giving the place a bad name, but they are a minority and hopefully with more Garda resources on the way, they will get bored and just be pushed out.

I am proud of the Rose of Tralee festival, and how we have managed to keep it going for 56 years! Not many festivals can boast that! Next year we will have the regionals in Tralee and an extra day or two added onto the festival, with I think 3 nights televised! When the events centre is built and the dome gone, it can only get better. That events centre will bring so much more to the town all year round!

It was the only thing I went on myself. Maybe there investing in a new one, but it was definitely sold.

I used to love going on all the different rides, but I can't stomach them anymore! I hadn't been on the big wheel for years and was hoping to go on this year, but then it didn't come back! :(

Tyrone's Tiernan McCann free to play against Kerry on Sunday after having his 8 week ban overturned for falling down mortally wounded when the nasty Monaghan man ruffled his lovely hairdo

Yeah, think she's originally from cloondara.
She does seem to have a slightly romanticized vision of the Rose and what it really brings to the town. As I've said before, yes a nice economic boost for some sectors, but nothing more than grief for a lot more

Well done to both the Kerry minors & seniors on their win today! Through to another All-Ireland final! :) Ciarrai Abu!

Tbh, I find it a bit of lazy journalism! Citing a factory closure (Kingdom Tubes) from 1983 as a cause of the town's current woes is stretching it a bit! If you are still unemployed 32 years later that is not necessarily Tralee town's fault! No mention of Manor West which now employs around 1000 people. She is cynical of the knowledge solution being offered but then fails to mention Kerry Technology Park that has 100s of high calibre roles (JRI America, Aspen Grove, Stockbyte, etc) or the role of Tralee IT and the increased range of degrees and specialist research and training it offers for different academic sectors. Also the various tourism endeavors over the years have not just created employment for those particular attractions but also the hotels, cafes, bars, restaurants, gift shops etc that get tourist custom generated by visitors who come to Tralee for those attractions.

Also referring to 6000 unemployed as 1 in 4 of the town's population is misleading also. (pet hate of mine! :))That figure refers to all those that sign on at Tralee labour exchange which also covers the below areas per their website which covers a far larger population than 24000 so it is not 1 in 4 of all those of working age in Tralee (sure, it's still too high a figure but I'd prefer if it was accurately represented in the media).

Tralee has a lot of challenges (unemployment, antisocial behviour, crime, health and education shortages etc) but I would prefer a fairer, more balanced report in the national media...particularly when a native is writing the piece!

Areas Covered by Tralee Intreo offices:
Abbeydorney, Ardfert, Ballydesmond, Ballyduff, Ballyheigue, Ballymacelligott, Brosna, Camp, Castlegregory, Castleisland, Castlemaine, Causeway, Cordal, Currow, Farranfore, Fenit, Firies, Kilflynn, Kilmoyley, Knocknagoshel, Lixnaw, Lyrecrompane, Scartaglen

a guy was arrested in the attempted robbery of Spar.

Hussey's shop in Prince's Street also had an attempted robbery, but the shop assistant wouldn't hand over the money! Fair play to her, I know if it was me I probably would be the same!
