I got take away during the week with a friend and really liked the set up, staff were friendly and great balcony. But to be honest, I was charged €5.50 for a tiny sandwich. I know it was gluten free, but Kingdom Food and Wine sell massive spelt bread sandwiches for €3.50 with much more filling. Definitely not in a rush back there at all.

On Rocky Mountain, I never eat take away but said I'd give them a turn seeming as I heard so much negative press. I came up on a Thursday night and it was quiet enough, staff were extremely polite, it was spotless and there was a nice selection of food. Got a Louisiana Chicken Wrap and popcorn chicken and really liked them! The wrap was as nice as anything from KFC and the popcorn chicken was spicy! Prices were decent as well.

So, surprisingly enough, I was well pleased and although I wouldn't be in a rush to eat take away again, wouldn't have a problem goin there!

the problem with gluten free foods is it costs a lot more than normal bread etc. They haven't much choice then but to have to pass on that cost to a customer. The bread in Dunnes/Tesco is pretty expensive too. I have been eating more gluten free foods and its so much more expensive unfortunately when I am shopping for it, plus not a lot of nice gluten free foods in the supermarkets. The rest of their menu is very reasonable though, nothing is over €10, and you wouldn't even realise it was gluten free!
I've eaten stodgy big rolls in other places that cost almost as much and made me feel sick. Its not fair on coeliacs or anyone who has a specialised diet to have to pay more, but that's how it is at the moment. Plus spelt bread isn't gluten free either.

Well I suppose a big part of how the Gluten Free place sells themselves was that people who aren't gluten/wheat intolerant can eat there and get great value and food as well as those who aren't. The lad I was with isn't gluten/wheat intolerant and said he wouldn't be in a rush to go back again. €5.50 is a huge amount for a tiny sandwich for someone who isn't gluten/wheat intolerant. As he said, Ray's Loaded Lunches give fine big fresh rolls with warm ham or freshly cooked beef and home made salad for less than €4.00!!!

Good to see Ray is back as well! The lunches in there are super! Seriously home cooked and great when you've a hangover and don't want a Chinese or greasy food option!!! Nice fella as well!

I suppose people who are not coeliacs or wheat intolerant won't really appreciate why its a bit more expensive than normal stuff. It doesn't bother me and I know a few people who are coeliacs and they are so glad just to have somewhere they can eat without being sick or having a crappy gluten free option! Plus there's the risk of cross contamination in non-gluten free restaurants, even if they claim its gluten free it can still make a coeliac ill.
I wouldn't really compare a big roll to a gluten free roll as they are stodgy (and bad for anyone not just a coeliac!). Those rolls are processed foods, mass produced and full of cheap crap, which don't digest properly, whereas gluten free breads/rolls aren't and its still very hard to get decent stuff in supermarkets etc. BFree are so far the best for rolls and wraps (and Irish thankfully), but they are expensive. Its like organic food, better for you but more expensive, which is unfortunate for those of us who want to eat a bit healthier!

Popcorn chicken freaks me out. What part of a chicken could possibly be the popcorn. Bleh.

Its just a breast of chicken which is cut into small pieces.

I know I mentioned it before a few weeks ago, but 'Mickos', where Costa Coffee is meant to be opening, seems to be nowhere near ready, nothing seems to be happening in there lately. I thought they were going to be open by the festival, but I can't see it happening now.

Yeah, in KFC I'm pretty sure they don't use a lovely breast of chicken to make the popcorn, more likely the scraps that are spun off the bone and stuck back together, the texture is bizarre.

Nobody mentioned popcorn chicken from KFC. They got popcorn chicken in Rocky Mountain.

I dread to think what's in "chicken balls" in that case!

Yes I do know that, thanks. The only time I've ever tried it and the first place I heard of it was KFC, I didn't say anything about how Rocky Mountain make theirs did I. Jesus.

With the greatest of respect, I saw your original comment before you edited it and added in the entire three lines about unhealthy food.

Inferring that rolls that are produced by Ray's Loaded Lunches, Denny Lane Café, The Roast House and other cafe's in town etc etc as 'cheap processed crap' is extremely unfair. Considering that the vast amount of Irish people eat white/brown bread and rolls you are implying that virtually the entire country is and always has been wrong in what they eat. Maybe they are, but I feel there is a certain level of food snobbery, and judging from the extremely regular and exceptionally informative postings on The Gluten Free place I have no doubt there is an extremely close connection there.

As I said, do you know the rolls and sandwiches produced in Ray's and The Roast House for example are not from local bakers?

Also, the ham I get in Ray's on my 'stodgy crap roll' is freshly cooked and still roasting, as opposed to that which I had in the Gluten Free place, which was average.

I respect everyone's opinions, but most people don't mind white bread, and those who can't stomach it, shouldn't be so dismissive.

Yea, and as I said, twas actually really nice!!!! Good to see them pickin up the act after a few dodgy opening days! Lot of jobs for the town!

Relax. I thought maybe you had misread the post because KFC and popcorn chicken were mentioned close together.

My problem with processed chicken is the fact that they are injected with liquids & hormones to make them bigger & then the customers eating said chicken consume those hormones........testosterone being one of them I'm guessing.

The majority of rolls served are not produced by the particular restaurant or deli or local bakers??? If your a regular visitor to town in the mornings you'll see the cuisine de France truck making deliveries to most of the deli's and restaurants in town??? The rolls are just stuck in the oven and baked for a bit until crisp!!!!

    that's my point!

@Carraig95 I would love to be able to eat those rolls, but they don't agree with me, and I've learned that they are bad for everyone, but we do eat things that are bad for us. I am merely pointing out the difference between normal white bread and gluten free bread. It costs far more to make than it does using normal flour etc!
And the daily grind buy in their rolls, as do most of the establishments in the town!

so what if I know the owner of the gluten free cafe, I also know the owners of the Roast House, and Denny Lane cafe and other places in town! I am being informative about it because I have said before, I have been eating more gluten free food for a while now, eventhough I'm not deemed coeliac, but for other health reasons that I am not going to post here for personal reasons.
I wasn't trying to run down anywhere that sells normal bread. Why are you being so defensive? I just tried to explain more about gluten free food!?

Ah look, I just pointed out that a friend of mine thought the sandwich was small and too expensive, you came all out on the defence for your 'friend' who owns the company and when I referred to my friend saying that he preferred Ray's roll, you came back saying it was stodgy, crap and processed food.

Never did I say there was anything wrong with The Gluten Free place, just overpriced, now if that deserves a lecture on the pro's and con's of white bread rolls versus gluten free products I shall once more keep my opinions to myself.

Unreal, certain posters can say anything about any business on this forum and nothing is said, and others (who look in every single day, but never feel comfortable to post...and before anything is said, I was one of the few people here positive about Rocky Mountain, and I always back up any negative observation with a valid point) others can't say a word.

No need for a retort. I'll disappear again and leave the hardcore few rule the thread once more.

Is it time to ring the Guiness Book of Records to see if Carmels Discount qualifies for the longest closing down sale in history.

You have probably already gone by now, but if not You could go to O'Donnells up in Mounthawk, I think you can sit outside too!
Otherwise there is Cassidy's in Abbey carpark if you're not pushed about sitting out.
Its so long since I've been out for a meal I forget where to go! Let us know where you go and what the verdict is :)

He/she gave an honest opinion, people did not agree with it, he/she defended his/her comments and now the situation has yet again escalated in to something not needed.

With the greatest respect traleespud it is no wonder why carraig reads from the sidelines. I have said far worse and so have others and have not been treated like that on account of a difference of opinion.

Give the man or woman a break :).
