A larger than life figure in the town of Ballinasloe will be laid to rest tomorrow.

With him goes a mind of knowledge, wisdom, and book loads of stories that will never replaced.

    RIP Mattie.

From Ballinasloe Life Magazine's Facebook page.

    Tuesday

    ComhBhron,
Ballinasloe and indeed wider a field, is still in a state of shock as news of Mattie Ganley/s death moved from rumour to fact at lunchtime today.
Though of robust and rude health , his last few weeks were spent battling a heart complaint, which his 84 summers had conditioned him for.
He died peacefully and very unexpectedly at home this morning. Funeral Arrangements are currently being made*.
As a National School Teacher, Gaelgoir, GAA PLayer, Mentor, Enthusiast , Historian and Political Activist - he appeared collusss like in the memory & minds of most Ballinasloe people! However - it as a loving husband, formidable father and gregarous Granddad to his sons and daughter of Ciaran ( Boston) Grellan (Blsoe) Conor (Portlaoise) and Sinead (Dublin) - who will undoubtedly miss him the most .
He was a committed contributor and critique of the first2 volumes of the LIFE Magazine and no doubt over the comming days and weeks ahead we will find a suitable way to mark his passing.
I am still a bit numb as I type this and can't really find the right consonants to convey the sense of emptiness .
