Might be of interest - Annalee Athletics Club and 2nd Cavan Scouts will co-host a 5k run at the new International Scout Centre, Castle Saunderson Estate, located less than 20 minutes from Cavan Town.

Chip timed course on forest trails and includes Family Fun Day so fun for all :). Its about 20 mins north of Cavan town right on the border with Fermanagh.

All the details in the link.

Thanks. Plan to do this run and the 5k in Kells at the end of this month.

Glad you're thinking of coming along - registration has been good so far and we have loads of activities lined up - junior 600m and 1.2k races, archery, mountain biking, paintball, tree climbing, crate climbing and 3 large bouncy castles for the younger ones.

I'd be happy to answer any queries posted here - some more info on facebook.com/CastleRun2013

Nice idea to link the run with a family day. Means the family get to have fun rather than just go to watch a run. Might take the family for a day out.

Thanks Duzzie, that's the plan! Lots of activities for the kids (and adults) both before and after the main race, means the runners might get to stick around for the prizegiving for once!

Have put up some route pictures on the facebook page if anyone would like to take a look: link

Looks good, very scenic. Do you know if the castle grounds are open all the time for people to go for a walk or run?? The roads around Belturbet are not great for going for a run with all the traffic

Yes, there's always pedestrian access via the front gate and also space for parking outside. You're more likely to see the main gate open at the weekend and if so, you can drive right up and park at the Scout Centre.

Here's a link to the the route map if you'd like to have a go before the race.

Cheers for that - well definitely be doing a trial run of the course..

Let me know how you get on. We have a work crew going out next weekend to iron out the wrinkles, so all comments will be taken on board.

The main gate is at the 3k mark by the way, there's an easier to follow map on the facebook page which cuts out the unnecessary stuff.

Hi all, last call for pre-entries for the run as we aren't far from capacity. Good weather forecast so possibly a few arriving on the day as well.

Thanks to all those who have entered to date - looking forward to seeing everyone there.

Looking forward to this, hoping for a good time, or at least a good time for me. Hopefully the weather will be good to make it enjoyable for everyone, but not too warm. Are the many signed up??

    Weather looks good

Yep, we have a very respectable 554 at the moment and we've heard of a few more planning to come along on Sunday. Catherina McKiernan is running so she may be the one to beat on her home turf.

We have a good number of of U14s and U20s registered and while some will walk the route, most are running and for many of these it will be their first 5k, which we're really pleased about as it was the point of the exercise in the first place. We're running pacer groups of 30/35/40min specifically for the kids, to provide the extra bit of encouragement you get from running in a group.

Weather is looking not too bad at all, keep the fingers crossed. Was sunny out on the course today and was quite humid in the forest, so planning extra water stations.

We're running a bit of a sweepstake on the winning time on the FB page at the moment, feel free everyone to join in. A small prize for the winner.

Thats my chances of winning out the window then :D

Congratulations to Conan McCaughey of Enniskillen Running Club, who won in 16:25 - a great time on a challenging course.

Second - Martin Fulton, 16:57 and third Cian O'Reilly, Annalee AC, in 17:21.

Full chipped results on Precision: here (we also had 240 walkers, 600 in total).

Big thank you to all who entered and see you next year - hope you had a great day.

Well done to Cavan Scouts and Annalee Athletic Club on a fantastic event - really well organised. Hope this becomes a permanent fixture on the calendar. Special word for Catriona McKiernan who was so generous with her time for everyone - a real champion.

Really enjoyed today, thanks to all the organisers and volunteers. The course was tougher than I expected with the two hills and the gravel trails making it quite a challenge, but it was a beautiful course in splendid surroundings and a very enjoyable day out.

Thank you to all for the postive comments, it's very encouraging to hear and we're already thinking about bigger & better for next year!

The final numbers were 360 chipped runners and 260 non-chipped (we had a cheaper registration option in place for large groups), 620 in all.

In total we had around 1100 people between competitors, families and spectators over the course of the day. I hope all those who pre-registered got their goody bags and t-shirt ok - so far I've only heard of a few late arrivals who didn't and we're looking after them.

Special thanks again to guest-of-honour Catherina McKiernan who was an absolute star and also 1st female, finishing in 18:27.

Just waiting for the photos to come back now and they'll be up on the facebook site asap.

We had junior races afterwards with medals as well for the little ones.

Just to mention the second Castle Run 5k takes place this Sunday 29th June - hopefully we'll see everyone who competed last year.
