Me and my friend hike a good bit and kind have got into the habit of the same safe hiking locations, would be good to get a second perspective.

Dont want paying to join a group as these days its hard to commit to every weekend the way the economy and job situs are not reliable.

There no avoiding paying for joining an MI affiliated club but it's cheap enough. And you get MI insurance and 10% discount in most outdoor stores so you can end up saving money.
