Hi, just looking for recommendations for Pubs in London this weekend, (I know there's threads elsewhere but none within the last 6 months) for herself & I it's both our first time going there. Anyone over there know of any events happening & places cheap to go to, also any places to avoid for the tourist traps?

    Thanks in advance

What sorts of pubs are you looking for? Quiet ones, loud ones, ones with live music, sports bars, ales, young crowd, older crowd, stand-up comedy etc?

For cheap pubs, you could try the Wetherspoon's and Sam Smith's chains, but they're not to everyone's taste.

Young, cheap, & the stand up would suit lol. I don't mind Weatherspoons, well at least the one in Manchester, basically recommendations from people who know the area would do us.

Which area? London's huge if you're looking for recommendations on a particular area, let us know which.

If you're going for grub avoid Angus Steak Houses and Garfunkel's like the plague, they're horrible tourist traps serving nothing but muck. Also avoid Wetherspoon pubs, they're drab and depressing and definitely not the type of place you want to be spending a holiday. Awful, awful places for socialising.

One thing I will recommend is the Africa Club in Covent Garden, they do stand up most nights of a great quality and it's only a tenner in. Coupled with that, pints are only £3 a pop in there. They'll often have reasonably big names performing too. It's a great start to a night in town and p*ss cheap to boot.

Also don't limit yourself to the city centre. Jump on the Northern Line and get up to Camden Town or Angel. You'll find a serious buzz there with more hopping pubs than you can shake a stick at; they're also central enough to get back into town if you're staying at a hotel.

Holborn has a decent little notch of pubs all walking distance from each other, Penderels Oak is a big spacious Wetherspoons open late at the weekends, nearby you have the Belgo Bierodrome, the Princess Louise and the Holborn Whippet brewpub.

It's not too jammers or touristy around there yet still quite a central and cosmopolitan area. Maybe fill up first at Belgo Centraal not too far away.
