Plug marks where very deep in the greens, but the greens where like carpets amazing , bunkers need a fill of sand, some where very wet, Fairways a joy to hit off but a bit soft ball was stopping where it hit

If I was a member id spend an hour in the short game area before every round amazing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,823 ✭✭✭✭First Up

Fair enough. I'd be a bit concerned about the soft fairways though. If it's like that after our best summer in years...... It's a great course. I hope they can make it work.

I played 9h this evening and there was loads of run on the fairways, place is very firm! Greens are being verti-cut amd topdressed on Tuesday to get some speed into them so it great to see some work going on.

Those deals were probably part of the NAMA policy of getting in cash by whatever means. Different story now and I don't blame them for pricing it properly. They are right to position it as quality course - not a cheap day out for bargain hunters.

Went out for 18 in Palmerstown yesterday - my first time there. €40 was the best greenfee available on Teetimes (although it looks like there are one slot for €25 available some days) but i rang up and booked over the phone. When i arrived, I was charged €35. It was well worth it - the greens were probably the best i played all year.

is palmerstown gui affiliated? tempted to join next year if the membership is in fact 1000euro,seems like great value.

Passed the 50 members required to form a club (nearing 70 at present) so they have started the application. Club Committee is currently been formed and all in all it will be October-ish (maybe later) before the GUI issue is sorted.

I don't think anyone thinking of joining will have a problem with that timeline. I'd say the majority of new members will move over after Christmas when their existing memberships fall due for renewal. I know I'm seriously considering it. The place is looking great..!

The Comer Group (new owners) have set up their Irish Offices there too... http://www.comerproperty.ie/contact-us/

Looks like they're taking it seriously and have plans to keep the place in good shape

Yeah, there were three or four of their vans/cars there last week when I called in...

Its refreshing to be talking about a golf club, its course and its surroundings in a positive manner with all the doom and gloom facing other clubs lately.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2 Fussmouse

I really hope it turns into a good news story, it has everything the likes of Carton House and others have it just needs to be marketed and managed in the right way.

The members will have a big part to play initially, using the bar and restaurant etc as much as they can.

I was out here last night, I have to say I really loved the course and will probably be joining up in the next few weeks. In regards the course length, I didn't find in too bad, although I don't think it would be much fun if you were having a bad day off the tee. Time wise I was around in about 2hrs & 50mins for the full 18 with my electric trolley, it's a good walk, but not hilly enough to make it a killer. The greens where in nice condition, not as quick as they looked but plenty of grass on them and very receptive considering how firm the ground was underfoot everywhere else. I just wish people would fix there bloody pitch marks, I must have fixed 4 or 5 on every green  I though the bunker where decent enough, as good as anywhere else I've played this year and the few I was in had plenty of sand. Roll on pay day so I can join up :D

God this is all very positive. Great to see. I have a few days to take off before they expire so I'll pencil this place in for a round.

We have a pub society at home and I wonder should I sound them out now regarding a rate for a society outing next year while they are still getting back up and running. Rather than waiting until next year when they could potentially be a lot more expensive...especially at the rate you guys are signing up :P

Great that you liked it and it is a great layout. I would just advise you to check how it performs in winter conditions before locking yourself in. I don't have direct experience of it in the wet but I hear persistent comments about poor drainage and you might want to check that out.
But at this time of year, it's a cracker of a course.

I noticed that too on Thursday about the pitch marks , just the amount of green fee's people just don't care to fix them

A problem almost everywhere as golf gets ever more "affordable". An unfortunate reality - the more visitors, the more unrepaired pitchmarks. Don't know what can be done about it. Hard pressed clubs will take business from anywhere and enforcing course etiquette is a relatively low priority.

Your constant negativity towards the opening up of Palmerstown to members is quite boring and obvious, leave it off, everyone that's joined or thinking of joining is delighted with the way things are going there. If you have a hidden agenda I apologise and please continue.

I not sure it's down to "affordability", more to do with lack of education of people new to the game in part, although some of the worst offenders I've seen have been playing for years, the guys the take the 6 inch divots and the crater pitch marks and just walk on expecting god knows who to repair the damage.

I'm currently a member in Grange Castle, it's the same there too, even on Saturday mornings when it's members only until 10.30, if you're out after 9am, there'll be multiple fresh unrepaired pitch marks on nearly every green, it's been pretty much the same everywhere I've played this year. I've find it very annoying considering the cost that goes into course maintenance and the fact that some of the worst offenders will also complain the loudest when a course isn't in good condition.

I think it just stood out in Palmerstown as the green look so good otherwise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,823 ✭✭✭✭First Up

You would like to think a club/members environment would help - a mix of education backed up by some sanctions. Has to be better than the pay and play scene and hopefully PH will benefit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 714 ✭✭✭loadwire

Played there over the weekend with a mate who has joined recently.

Lovely course. Off the front tees the course is a nice length, a good mix of holes. Off the middle or back tees I might say different, but then I'm shortish off the tee - a decent drive for me would be 220 yards. A lot of the tee-shots are quite forgiving so it does tempt you let loose (not sure if that would be good for my swing long-term :-P).

Bunkers defo need more sand and there are ****loads of them, but if they can get that sorted you have a pretty stunning course on your hands so I really hope it's a success.

Played this last week with levitronix, probably the best course ive ever played! Absolutely Class!!! Great to see somebody taking over that has good plans for the place and not been run into the ground by Nama!!

Thanks, how much for a bucket of balls and is there any loyalty type card for members where for a set fee you get a set number of tokens per day or an unlimited number of baskets throughout the year?
A driving range is a great onsite facility but have mixed opinions as to whether an open area where you can hit your own balls is better despite it being considerably more cost effective.

I'm not sure on a figure for balls but its only a nominal fee for members, I heard 3€ for 60 balls or something around that.
An area to hit your own balls certainly won't be used as much as one where balls are collected tbh,

We have that at our club and I've never seen anyone use it.
Granted, the grass is let grow a bit, but I think that is from lack of use (rather than people not using it due to poor maintenance)

I struggle to see how something like that would work....unless you are guaranteed to have the place to yourself (or a maximum of a couple of others using it).

If people are hitting their own balls out to the range, does everyone have to stop and wait for you to collect them when you are done, can't imagine it going smoothly if people start picking up other people balls by mistake/on purpose.

True a driving range with supplied and collected balls is much more convenient and likely to get used more but joining a club is expensive and then having to pay on top each time you want to warm up or practice is a pain in the pants and a deterrent.
Two clubs with driving ranges I previously inquired about regarding membership had good member loyalty driving range cards. In Killeen Castle you could purchase a range card for €100 and get unlimited range balls for the year and in Luttrellstown as part of your membership package you got two baskets of practice balls each day you were present after which you could purchase additional baskets if required.
The above systems gave an incentive to use the practice facilities so a similar loyalty system in Palmerstown House would be an additional benefit to a great course and membership deal.

With regards the play your own balls practice facilities at alot of clubs any time I've used them they've always been very quiet so any time there were more than 2 or 3 people I'd go to the putting green or course instead.

With regards Palmerstown in general I would love to join but can't justify the 30km (50min) each way commute so I can only hope the club is a success and look forward to playing some scratch cups and open competitions there next year.

Played here today for the first time ever. Can't believe how tough it is! All par 3's required big hits and I was hitting a lot of 3 woods into a few par 4s. Great greens. Fair way grass was a bit long but I'm guessing that's due to time of year etc. if they keep up the good work and shape the fairways it will be the best track in Ireland. They must have the best par 5's in Ireland, none are weak.

Was told they have over 100 member now. Tee-times are restricted at the weekend to 10:30 on a Saturday and 11:30 on a Sunday so be prepared for early morning golf. I was told this will be reviewed in 6 months. Which is fair enough for the price. Also, I loved the locker room and practice area.

Don't expect to see this membership fee lasting for ever.

Just as an FYI, members can play anytime, the time restrictions relate to members only time on the weekends.
Played last Friday and course was in amazing conditions, fairways nice length as well. Apparently they haven't put any growth regulator on the fairways yet so they can get loads of grass after the dry spell and have been cutting the fairways 3 times a week put growth is crazy at the moment.

If its fact then reference something on some publication, otherwise its not public "fact".

There isnt a club or company in the country who arent experiencing some sort of financial difficulty....we are in the middle of a recession?

We are not here to spread rumours and help flush a club down the toilet.
Also, this is a thread about Palmerstown House, start your own thread rather than disrupt this one.

I think the text to the members done that. Bodenstown closed as and from 28 Feb next.

This is a forum for chat. If you can't express an opinion or discuss hot local conversation topics, what is the point?

Same way chatting about betting in a thread is not allowed, in the tournament thread. Do you want to engage posters and discussion or keep boring threads?

Surely the closure of a neighbour club is very relevant when member numbers are being discussed. Is that not obvious?

Agreed it could alright but if you wanted to discuss the issues with Bodenstown as well it would be better to have its own thread and not get diluted in here with the rest of the posts.

Yes it could warrant its own thread, but I don't want to get into that. Such a shame what was done to the course. It was a great club with good members. We once had some great golfers including gorfied. I think i just wanted to add something to this thread that PH will gain great momentum from this, and not get into the gloom of the demise of a once great club.
