the two canals are obvious right of ways to use for a bank-side LUAS but only IF there is a demonstrable traffic on offer and no better alternative. On-street tramways seem to be the norm in major cites across the world .
Personally, I'd like to see car traffic severely restricted in city centres with the emphasis shifed to Pedestrians, Cyclists and trams and buses in that order of priority.

I think that linking the Luas lines using such areas as beside the canals has a lot of merit. Extending lines out to the sticks is a waste compared to increasing links within the city. Look at the Paris Metro and how the lines weave through Paris such that you can get from one place to another with few interchanges.

With the Marlborogh St bridge nearing completion, maybe we will see some interconnection of Luas in the Future.

To have an massive impact the Luas lines should have interconnections and not just one
The idea of a Luas Line skirting the grand canal from the red line dolphin road under the greenline at charlemont and on to Grandcanal Dart station

A Royal canal skirting Luas from Broombridge (terminus of BXD line) on the rail line south of the canal (use the Rail line north of the canal and Crokepark) is also a good idea it could go under the line at connolly and join the red line, or go into docklands and IFSC
Luas(royal canal) stops North Strand, Drumcondra, Phibsboro
Luas(Grand canal) stops at Coomb Harolds cross, Portobello charlmont, Mespil road Percy Place and grand canal dock
