In fairness even if the kids wear uniforms the rest of the family have to dress up. Even a very low cost ceremony is a big expense for low income families. The problem is that this religious expense should not be supported by the exchequer. There should never have been a grant specifically for religious ceremonies. The exceptional needs grant is the right way to handle it, that way those on low income are still protected.

Joe is very quick to get rid of people who disagree with him over this issue.

There's nothing exceptional about communion, confirmation or birthdays or christmas FFS

I dont think many Muslims applied for a grant for their Communions, Joe.

Joe back to shouting down/at his callers. How does he (and Vincent Brown) get away with that???

Joe is getting cranky now, doesn't like having the majority of callers being put through disagreeing with him.

Joe hit the nail on the head himself there = most of the poor are *nominallly* catholics that won't see the inside of a church from one communion to the next.

He then realised that was 'agin' his agenda so brushed over his own point.

Awww, is Joe throwing his toys out of the pram. How dare somebody oppose his opinion.

Completely agree. I think this grant should only be used in exceptional circumstances e.g. sudden hospital visit with a child, clothes for a funeral etc. not for something which is known about for years in advance.

Its probably been said here earlier but there is a simple solution, the Catholic Church should pay for dresses etc by setting up a fund, maybe the Vatican (estimated wealth 10 to 15 billion) could sell some of their fancy rings and priceless renaissance artwork to fund it.

Don't get Joe started on the rich Muslims and Protestants, keeping the good Catholics bet down in the gutter.

"Shameful that the cut has been made"

It's shameful that taxes from non-Catholics are going to a Catholic event in the first place.

Ridiculous grant. Cut the fcuk out of all these stupid grants.

You have 8 years to save for a kid's Communion. Social welfare is for food, heat, light, clothes and shelter. It is not for Communions, parties, Sky, holidays, Christmas presents or any other non-essential.

This country is social welfare mad.

Taxes go to other groups that you may not be a member of. Why draw that kind of distinction?
