Have these people ANY idea of the cost of treating their children. They are entitled to a refund of anything over €140 a month for drugs etc without a medical card. What is all the fuss about. They seem to be more concerned about money than their children's health!

But if her husband is working away, he must be earning, so why can't she afford medical care. Or is it because he has a serious illness that they expect a medical card?

Ah come on now. The government doesn't give a sh1t about people sitting at home on the dole but when it comes to the care of very sick children they cut the benefits.

The children don't have a vote and becuase there isn't that many it's not a big issue for them.

The medical card is means tested and the administrators have to look for paperwork. If they don't, then even Michael O'Leary would be entitled to a medical card.

Its a pity Joe doesnt push this as far as he can to help these people, I hope its not gonna become pie in the sky

Good ole HSE managers protecting their own T&C's by fcuking over sick people.

It's not the HSE per say. The administrators are forced to follow guidelines set out by financial experts analysing the accounts looking for savings. If the administrators handed out cards where they shouldn't be they would be fired. The blame here lies with the government.

I understand where your coming from...but in cancer cases it seems the "solid tumors" dont qualify...

Joe should be asking about their earning capacity - i.e. that lady's husband is working. I wonder do they have Sky tv?

As someone else said, you get the medical card depending on your financial circumstances, not depending on your health circumstances.

The floodgates would open if medical cards were granted to children with cancer. People of all ages get cancer, many of whom don't have medical cards.

Where's the joined up thinking and systems? The HSE should have all the information they need on their systems, or revenue systems. If they don't, they're incompetent. We've had paperless systems in the private sector for a couple of decades.

Well you know what, they bl00dy well should. Get these tossers, drug addicts etc, off their fat lazy ar$es, take their medical cards and use it for the people who have serious illnesses, through no fault of their own, instead of for methadone etc, where these eegits are taking drugs and expect the state to keep them.

This is heart-breaking to listen to, it really is. This man sums it up well. It's embarrassing how the State has failed these people. Fun runners raising money to build hospitals while the government piss money away.

With this particular issue Joe is chiselling against a gigantic granite elephant, and the elephants name is the HSE. I was watching Ramsays kitchen nightmares last night. I want someone to come into the HSE and do the same thing.

And now we're back to the normal Liveline..... "Way-in" and his antics. These fcukers cost us a hell of a lot more than the people we should be protecting.

Way-in should be fcuked out to Spike Island and let fend for himself.

"me father gave him a good clattering..."

There is no point in blaming Enda Kenny for this.. it was a mess when he took over and it will be a mess when they hand it over to the next shower. The blame lies at the door of two sets of people... Management in the upper levels of the civil and public service, who can see what is happening in hospitals and are too cowardly and self serving to make the decisions necessary to run a proper health service... Secondly, the unions who put their own members terms and conditions ahead of the lives of small children.. They both should be truly ashamed of themselves..
