Does not mean "Ian Keatley is not good enough in other elements of his game to make up for his non-top class kicking".

I'm not going to get into it further. Your statement was a write-off of an outhalf because he wasn't kicking well. It is an argument that pops up time and time again because Irish rugby was blessed to have an outstanding kicker (who also played at 10) for so long. We've come to pair them both.

Rugby is a team sport. You pick the team most likely to win a game as a coach. Sometimes that means you play a guy who doesn't kick (see Crosbie in his second year @ U20s) because he adds a dimension to the backline that the 5* kicker can't.

There's no shame or issue with being a non-kicking 10. Larkham was one of the world's best out halves without being much use off the deck. We should have plenty of good footballers in our rugby teams, well able to kick goals. McFadden, Murray, Carr are all players that were prolific kickers and didn't play out half.

In any case. Keatley is a good kicker, still young (26) and is about to take the reigns at Munster for the coming season. Writing him off because he missed an easy kick in the Tiblisi Cup is a bit odd no?

Firstly I'm not writing him off other than for this coming season. Too many better players than him, especially under pressure. Anyone and everyone can improve, though at 26 he is no spring chicken. Your point about 10 being a kicker is just repeating something I didn't disagree about at all. We had Tom Kiernan for years.

showed that an out half that can't kick can be a pretty useful member of a team.

A fairly complete one man dismissal of the statement

Yes. Jack Kyle, Tom Kiernan, Mike Gibson, Paul Deans, Elwood and a host of other 'kickers' for Ireland should never have been capped as they 'didn't deliver with the boot' at 90%. Lucky buggers to have even been thought about as potential internationals.....:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

.and Kiernan was pretty crap at goal kicking. His nephew, Michael was a better kicker.

So your basing your view on him as a poor kicker under pressure on one game?

He could be possibly better as a loosey, that's his natural position afaik

22 man squads in the Tblisi cup.

So does Lutton, as does McGrath albeit poorly.

Pity Moore got no gametime on this tour.

12-0 or 14-0 TOH try the stream didn't bother showing the conversion instead focusing on the replay

Hopefully I won't come to regret saying this but some of these players are way way too good for this level of opposition, TOH, Morris, Kearney beating men at will

    less than 20 minutes in

Yeah cheers. Unfortunately I'm on the way to the office to do some work.

Hopefully I'll get it up on a stream when I get in but that kindve defeats the purpose of going in the first place!

Bent's contribution thus far has been to get turned over in contact 5m from the line, concede a braindead penalty at a maul for coming in from the side and concede a penalty for crossing.

Heaney on for Cooney 35 minutes

2 strange pieces of play from Ian Keatley. Kicking it out two yards up the line thinking its half time and then getting a penalty inside the Uruguay half and kicking it to touch when he knew it was definitely the final play. Why not have a shot at goal. It might be out of his range but what have you to lose.

    Niall Morris try

    All off the scrums.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 27,325 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

Nearly a length of the field try there after some piss poor tackling from Ireland. Knocked on on the line and Uruguay then mangle the Irish scrum. Uruguay came very close to making the last few minutes worrying there.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 27,325 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

Another Uruguay try. Unfathomable how Ireland don't have a player in the bin by now. That's about 4 penalties in the last 5 minutes near our line.

Game over 42-33. Uruguay played some pretty good stuff in that last half hour.

Hmmm. Very surprised by that scoreline. Uruguay scored 9 points against SA and 3 against Georgia. That's not an impressive scoreline by any stretch.

From the looks of it the Irish players were simply shattered. It was 31 degrees and their third game in two weeks. They went out to a big lead and then the Uruguayans racked up a good few tries.

Its an extremely poor scoreline to a bottom tier side, no doubt about it.

Their heads were somewhere else, a few i'd say didn't want to be there.

Like Cronin was meant to be in the original squad. One would suspect that he'd have been raging at that. I'd say a few similar situations ala Keatley and Ruddock.
