Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Future teacher query regarding Teaching Council

I have been accepted into the PDE and my subjects are English and History. I am a little confused and turned off after all the info I've read lately. (I've been abroad, so not fully tuned in to how bad things are for teachers now)

I am aware that the job prospects are very low in Ireland right now. The only reason I am doing the Dip so soon is because I want to avoid the expense and time of having to do it over two years in the future.

The thoughts of returning to Ireland are very unpleasant. My plan was to get qualified and get out. Teach and work abroad for many more years. Return and look for a job.

Is it true that in the first three years after finishing, I have to attend workshops over the course of a year?

If I don't, will my qualification be revoked?

Yes it is true. However, there are lots of countries that have similar induction programmes and they will accept them instead if it is up to scratch.

Oh, I thought it was just the UK. What other countries?

I would probably go for ESL in Asia, and that of course wouldn't satisfy the council.

But, if one were not to complete this induction, what would happen?

Can someone elaborate and explain what this induction is?

    The website is here:

    http://www.teacherinduction.ie/

I'm sure if you call them you can get some answers.

Its basically an attempt by the teaching council to inculcate professional development by repeating the PDE modules once again except in far less detail without any proper measurement of the usefulness of the seminars. A petty attempt to mimic England's PD structures.

I'm doing the PDE now, and the TC came in the other day and answered all our questions for us - here goes....

Yes, you have to attend 10 workshops. However, if you go to the UK to teach, you can do the UK workshops over there. The TC are also going to arrange the workshops to be completed during the summer, when you get the teaching break so you can fly home if you need.

You also need 300 hours in 3 years but again, this can be done in the UK and signed off on there. Happy days :)

If all else fails, then they allow an extension to give you an extra 1-2 years to qualify.

So, if they are arranging for them to be done in the summer, does this mean you can do them straight after you finish the Dip in May/June?

So, it's fair enough that you can get the induction done in the UK.

But if I wanted a job in Dubai and Canada, would they think I'm not a fully qualified teacher just because I haven't yet completed the TC induction and 300 hours?

Well you're a NQT (newly qualified teacher) as far as I know? And yes, they said they would try and arrange summer workshops for those who have emigrated to teach - alternatively if you do the UK workshops and 300 UK hours, I think you still qualify over here. I should mention - the 300 hours doesn't count if you're teaching english as a foreign language. Not sure if that would put the Dubai plans on hold.
