Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

And it has the 140bhp engine which they say is the best compromise, climate control, traction control, leather, the front looks great, TB done and serviced AND NCT unil 08/15...
It's a bargain pure and simple.
I just wish I could find out if it was taxed :)

I'd take that Colt of yours any day over that 156. :P

If you look closely at the photos of that Alfa it has lots of big dents etc...
    Been for sale weeks now.

Yep there is one dent on the rear right hand side door and one on the boot.
Well worth the money IMO. If it has been on sale weeks then you could surely get it lower

Is the money not a bit strong on that charisma? They don't seem to fetch good money at all.

Also the seller says it's the same 1.3 engine that's in the lancer. While this engine is very reliable, its gutless in the lancer so it must be woeful in the charisma. Also in the lancer it's mated to a lovely smooth Mitsubishi gearbox, you would think Mitsubishi would use the same box in the charisma but oh no in their wisdom they only had to go and use a renualt gearbox in the charisma, a gearbox which can only be described as awful.

Seems to be testing the water with the price alright. He might get decent money for it with the cheap tax though. Worth about 13/1400 I reckon. An engine conversion would be nice :)

Whats the 156 petrol like on reliability and economy?

The girlfriend be looking for her first car in a few months and I'm trying to push towards the 159 JDTM if money allows make her car the sensible economical family car and keep my car as the gas guzzling fun car :).

But very well could be looking at bangernomics territory yet for her 1st car yet and do like the 156.

Economy wise, I heard if you drive it uber gently you might see 38 mpg.
Generally though I think you are looking at 33mpg combined.
Reliability it all depends on how the previous owner cared for it. Neglect it and it will break your heart.
Judging by that ad I would wager it was maintained properly, cosmetically maybe not so much.
If you do the belts and oil in time then the car should do you well.
    Alfas love frequent oil changes.

The 156s when new didn't have a great rep for reliability

    BUT

I would expect a lot of the REALLY troublesome examples to have either a) been fixed during their lifetime - or b) to have been scrapped by now. I can't say though if this is actually the case or not - and id be inclined to be off the view to take a lot of care and attention if considering buying one now

One of the big issues on them that helped create their reputation - was from what I remember - Alfa recommending a 72,000 mile interval for the timing belt (to appeal to fleet customers maybe) - but 156s suffered broken belts before getting to the 72,000 mile.

Not sure if Alfa changed the timing belt interval to 36,000 miles subsequently - but from what ive read on forums - its seems a 36,000 mile interval is seen as best practice on a 156.

    Best of luck anyway

I thought the purpose of Bangernomics was a car that you could buy, drive and then sell on, and not lose a lot of money.

That MR2 would swallow every cent ya have in constant repairs.

Definitely not bangernomics in my opnion

If it meets the thread criteria - then it fully deserves to be here imo - and I personally welcome its presence here.

Now if people feel some cars don't meet the criteria - then be all means ask for the tread criteria to be filled.

Personally - I feel the tread criteria is fine - and should stay unchanged - so if MR2 meets criteria - I welcome it.

Needs a seperate "mk1 mr2, bangernomics?" thread at this stage.

Why would it? Simple mechanicals from the late 80's and that engine is very reliable. You could definitely buy that car and sell it for the same next year imo

Can a separate thread be made about the MR2?
Getting tiring having to go through the posts complaining about that particular car.
I thought the whole point of this thread was to post something that is road legal, under 2k and is something that the poster would actually drive.
The poster has made it clear he/she would, now can we either leave it at that or create a separate thread so that those who don't care about the car don't have to keep seeing it?

I'd wager that that yoke hasn't had it's belts and pump done.. if not then factor in another 4/500e if the variator is bad.

Ah ffs, those mr2's are one of the most reliable cars ever made. What "constant repairs" are you talking about?

That mr2 is bangernomics as it meets all the criteria. Luckily your opinion isn't part of the said criteria ;)

tbh your post and arguments are getting a bit silly now.

Well that means all the large engined cars shouldn't be posted here with high running costs and high repair costs if something goes wrong.

I reckon so with that Stilo. The Shyte ones must all be gone now. Add to that it has a very nice spec.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,822 ✭✭✭Old diesel

I wouldn't be a huge fan of that Stilo

Price looks fine for 04 diesel - the mileage is okay if its in decent order - but given their reputation plus that ones mileage - id say 800 euro would be plenty.

But im delighted that its gone on to do a big mileage - nice to see given their not so great general reputation.

I think the ad said offers invited. I wouldn't be surprised if you got it for 800.

I really wanted one as my first car. In hindsight my father was right to stop me. He'd be going ape sh!t if he was still alive to see me in an Alfa.

I really do hate the belief that Fiats are unreliable scrap heaps. My Panda was the best small car i've ever had and there's been Fiat's in my family since the 1970s and they've never given bother. They are cheap, no frills motoring.

I used to love our Fiat Tipo as a kid. The Marea estate we had a few years ago was great too.

Errm - im in the camp that reckons that Fiats are nothing like as bad as what they are often made out to be.

BUT - reputation of a car DOES have a big impact on selling price 2nd hand.

that car isn't BAD value - but id expect it to be cheaper based on the Stilo reputation which isn't great - and the 232 000 miles on the clock of that particular example.

Pandas are great little cars to be fair

Never had one so i'll take your word for it. Just seems like a pointless car really, the hatchback that is.

We've had Uno's, Tipos, Panda's, Puntos and a Marea and they gave us zero problems.

And yeah the perception of Fiat(and French cars) really means you can get some bargains if you know what you're doing. It's perfectly feasible to get a lovely Fiat/Citroen/Renault, fully equipped for about half or even less then your bog standard poverty spec 1.4 VW Golf.

My friend had a 1.2 Stilo, woeful car, too heavy for the engine that was in it, wheels were much too big, the finish on it was weak (interior loosened as it got older) and loads of little nigglely little problems with it, he hated it so much that when he had to do a run from Sligo to Dublin he used to borrow my Civic, I drove it a few times and hated it too. From what I've heard on the Panda, they seem to be world's apart.

In all fairness, what did he think it would be like with a 1.2???
Blame the car when the buyer has as much to answer for.

Judging by the mileage and no mention of it then the belt could go within a few hundred km, could be wrong and it has been done.
    No need for the rolleyes.

Ha, told him the same. "It's just for around town" he replied. I think he would've put up with the lack of power if it wasn't for all the other issues.

    '02 Black 325ci
102K miles (no mention of service history though)
    nct 02/15
    3 previous Owners
    No tax
    In Limerick
    1,750e

Looks well minded and fresh. Would be well worth the money if it has a FSH (unlikely). Still priced well with the 2.5L engine.

Which was why Id said go over it with a fine tooth comb. Diesel noise on start up and the varistors gone, if its not there, it can be assumed its been done at some stage.
If it was me, id be buying and belting it unless it had specialist receipts/an owner who knew about cam locks that did it recently.

However if the belt did go, theres still your moneys worth of parts on it that can be shifted quickly.

Possibly but at 475, it's hardly worth the expense, if the belt did go (no guarantee it would), then you could get your money back in the parts, hence the rolleyes.

That said, you could belt it (400 sounds very expensive) and have a car that would last another few years for around the 800 mark, not bad.
