According to the ESB the last activity on the branch was in 1968 for the filming of a scene for the 1969 film "Guns in the Heather" aka "The Secret of Boyne Castle".

The full movie - which is not worth watching (I know!) - is available on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LRuQxrc3pg Start watching at 57.27 - it could be anywhere as there's no recognisable landmarks. The signal cabin was not on the branch!

The rails did go to a preservation scheme in the end - possibly the Waterford & Suir Valley Rly. It would have been a pretty little run and the ESB were very keen on the idea.

Some pictures of the branch here: https://esbarchives.ie/2017/02/06/irrs-tour-of-ardnacrusha-september-1962/

Wasn't the narrow gauge created on the WSVR by moving in the rails of the extant normal gauge track if I recall correctly ?

Correct but the Ardnacrusha rails also went there AFAIK - I'll check and report back.
