Things you did as a teenager to look 'cool'

Barely out of my teenage years, but I did nothing to look "cool". I never wanted to fit in with any cliques or follow trends and I respect my own individualism too much. I feel that following anything just to"fit in" is betraying myself.

Apart from that, anyone else chew matchsticks? it was essential to roll them from one side of your mouth to the other for the full cool effect though :o

My mates Blondie, Tuco and Angel did.

Had no shoes to wear one day so had to wear my white slip on shoes (a muddy brown when the day was over after footie) from Communion. I never got as many compliments as I did that day! :)

Wore a leather jacket, my brother was nicknamed Fonz and I was Little Fonz when I came to primary school.

    'Nope' hoodies
Tying your laces under the tongue of your runners so the couldn't be seen
    Scrunchies /shudder
I remember the cuffs of my school jumper being so bad the principal pulling me up on it... So of course that made me extra cool.

Threw copious amounts of shapes, walking down the street looking like I'd suffered a brain injury.

I dyed my fringe blonde and the peroxide made my hair fall out. Cool factor -100.

This, and scrunch dried my hair after applying half a can of mousse. You knew you were doing it right when it took an hour to comb the knots out of your hair after washing it. :o

    Baggy jeans
Those key chains that hung from one belt loop to another
Long hair with a bald undercut under it
Bizzare attempts at dying said long hair
Only one strap with the schoolbag

I was an awful arsonist in my teenage years and once set a church on fire. I was also a liar and am yet to give that up.

    Sun-in to "lighten" my hair

    Adidas rip away tracksuit bottoms

    Spice girls platforms (shudder)

And for the underage discos a tiny skirt and string top with an umbro zip-up tracksuit top over it. Just so the boys would say "will you get off with me friend?"

We used to roll up socks and put it inside the socks we had on us so it bumped the tongue out so cool!(not!)

Used to bite holes in all my school jumpers so I could put my thumb through them and give the look of fingerless gloves

Grew my hair out long and then went to a hairdressers to get a mullet. Not the "stylish" modern version. The ignorant, offensive version from the 1980's. I even brought pictures of 1980's heavy metal bands with me to show what I wanted.

Nope, ended up with the modern, "stylish" one. Thought it didn't look too bad. Put up with it for a day, then went to a barber and got a blade 4 all over and sulked for a week. It took me months to grow my hair out long enough and I endured all sorts of ribbing over it, so I was bitter. I've been an advocate of the short back and sides ever since.

I was so swotty and uncool that I never tried to look cool, because I had no confidence that I actually knew what other people thought was cool. I'd have gotten it all wrong and looked even more uncool than usual. There were others like me, but they tried looking cool and always missed the mark, hence underlining their lack of inherent coolness.

So I never tried, and I'm still not cool but I don't care so that's alright.:)

The only thing I cared about as a teenager was getting out of my hometown.

Now that I've achieved it I have no more goals, no aim in life.

    *weeps*

You sound like most blokes that frequented 'McGrath's' on Dublin's O'Connell Street in the late 90's. A lovely bit o'rough to be found in there.:)

My uncle, a smoker, left behind some cigarette butts in an ashtray, which I stole and then smuggled into school. I went to the bathroom and lit the butts and waved them around me so that there would be a smell of smoke off my uniform and people would think, my she's such a rebel, smoking in the toilet. I still cringe when I think about it :o

Pretended I was chewing gum when,in fact, it was my tongue.

Playing it cool with a football when girls came by thinking a few nonchalant flicks would impress them. It didn't. 12 year old girls don't care for technical prowess on the pitch.

As states above, nicked my dad's Brylcreem and lathered it on. Hair would go rock hard after a while.

How many people tried this after reading the post?? :)

    Wore a Che Guevara T-shirt. :(

Binned it when I actually bothered my hole to read up about him, felt like a tit for wearing it.

I used to smoke those long brown menthol cigarettes to look extra cool (Aah, can't remember the name of them now!)

I used to smoke them in coffee shops, drinking cappucinos. I hated coffee, but thought it looked cooler than drinking a soft drink :o

    How you doin'?

(Might be a few years too late, but there you go...you finally got your intended audience's attention. :P)

I didn’t do anything cool as a teenager. I didn’t what was or wasn’t cool, that’s how out of the loop I was, plus I come from the countryside, so that’s not exactly a recipe for coolness. I did rebel against my peers by making sure my hair was neatly combed and tie done up to strangling tightness.

Tour to the cliffs of moher I brought a bottle of whiskey I took from home what am idiot
Wrote whoever I fancied, their name on my schoolbag. Lukesmom 4 ???
