Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

WW1 Records-Best site?

    I currently have worldwide annual membership with ancestry. I'm looking for 3 members of my family who died in ww1. Amcestry have given me possible results but I can't verify if it is my relations. Can anyone recommend a good site for these records that would give me the details I'm looking for. I was going to use armed forces site but the reviews seem very mixed. I don't mind having to pay to view the records but obviously don't want to waste money if its not going to tell me anymore than ancestry.

    afaik most of the surviving WW1 military service and pension records from the National Archives (Kew) are on either Ancestry or FMP UK - but about 60% no longer exist, as they were destroyed in the blitz.

    There are some other records available to download directly from Kew, and possibly others still in archives in London, and with the various regimental archives.

    Most WW1 deaths should be on the CWGC website, which can give you details that can help - sometimes parents names and address

    Thanks for you reply. I have tried these site but no luck, I am guessing the records are destroyed.
    I researched these 3 brothers through ancestry. They are my grandmother's uncles. She has never told me of her past as I know there is a family secret. She will not discuss it with me and would be very angry if she knew I had completed her tree. Btw I found the secret! I have got some information from her cousin who I found online. I know the records of these men are in her house as she is the last surviving member of the family its all very frustrating.
    The only reason I pursuing this is that I planning to visit the ww1 cemeteries in Europe and would like to have a starting point to my journey.

    Ancestry are pretty good for their WW1 records, have you tired variations of the name spellings and widening the years they were born???

    Do you know if they all died in WW1? If they didn't there might be a pension record for them....

    Have you found anything on the CWGC site that might tie in with family lore? (assuming they were in the British/Commonwealth/Imperial forces rather than US, German etc)

    Are there any medals in the family? If British/Commonwealth/Imperial forces, then the medals would have their name, rank, number inscribed to tie in with CWGC records.

    On Ancestry/FMP, you should be able to find an entry in either Soldiers Died in the Great War (SDGW) or Ireland's Memorial Records and often this gives place of birth and enlistment which can help narrow things down.
