rent a sander even a hand sander, then paint it with laquer.
We do that here and it works well

I've used this guy in the past and was very happy with him, no mess afterwards either & thought he was reasonable pricewise too

If you don't want to attempt it yourself check out http://www.ultimatefloorsanding.ie/File/limerick.asp . I know of a few people who used them and found them good.
