We have a mini schnauzer, almost 8 months old. When on lead she is fine when walking. If i try to run with her on the lead she growls and leans in to nip legs.

    Any tips to stop this?

She is off the lead in the park with a group of other dogs (not in Ireland, group of dog owners who meet in a park to socialise their dogs, no laws prohibiting it) alomst every day, when she runs with me off the lead we dont have thesame problem?

Sounds like she's just being a puppy as she is very young. But if you don't mind me saying so, I would consider her a bit young to be running with you yet. I ran with my first dog at about the 7/8mths but regret it now as I think I may have caused more pressure on what has developed to be 'funny' front limbs which didn't show too badly at the 8mth stage. She's not sore or anything with them, but I reckon she will suffer with arthritis in later years sooner than most dogs.

I delayed with my second pup after advise from others, only started running/cycling with her recently and she's nearly 14mths and even then it's with the mountain bike on soft ground for her. Their bones are still too soft for the impact of running even on soft ground at anything under 12-14mths.

If you do continue, the nipping is her just playing, with a few firm no's she should grow out of it. I tend to put mine on a lunge lead and harness and let them run in front. If on the bike though, I get her beside me.

Enjoy it though, it's great fun.

Thanks, I should have said that no, we are't running as jogging for exercise together. It has happened a few times when I have ran about 20 meters to catch up with someone, or once when crossing the road and some idiot went through red lights.

I'm not much of a jogger ! However...every year here they have a sponsored dog and owner run (1k, 3k or 5k), next year we will do the 1k together for fun. I guess I will hold off another 6 months or so before thinkin about working on her lead / running behaviour.

Ah if that's the case it's just excitement of 'what's happening WHAAAA???' I would think. Maybe just practise those 'bursts' of speed when you're not under pressure and give her a strong 'no' etc or whatever your corrective term is. You could have fun doing lead work with her in terms of going from a walk to stop to jog to stop so she learns to pay attention to you rather than your leg and rewarding for good behaviour :-) Then she'll learn to be calmer when you are under pressure to rev up the speed a little!
