    Hi guys,

I'm looking for a solution to network my house with a friend down the road, just under 500m. Unfortunately a new house is being built right in our line of sight so that might be an issue. There are potentially three lines of trees in the way but large gaps between them. I've attached a pic of the location showing the distance and house that will be in the way in a year or so :p I appreciate any suggestions. Thanks

There might be an excavator available then :)
Bit of fibre and hook everyone up ?

Without line of sight you stand no chance, but Ethernet will do 100m meaning it may be possible if you run a cable out the back from each house to avoid the house in the way

Bummer, if ethernet only does 100m that means that is out also. If I was to try the fibre route, where might I find the 500m fibre and connectors?

How about a really long extension lead and some power line adapters

Can you bounce those LOS products somehow? Back of your garden/land then LOS to the second house (or the opposite way)

If you have no other option and you want to go the copper route, you could use a VDSL modem pair ?

Why not include the house in the middle in the network, install on the chimney there and then both houses connect to it

If it was me I would use ronja.

Obviously you would have to elevate it in order to avoid the new build.

Never used the tech above, though always wanted to.

    What frequency does it use?

    Hi

You can but pre terminated fibre order to length with connectors on them you just need to pull it through a duct or clip it to a wall and so forth. Once installed you will need fibre converters each end which patch into you network at that point.

Assuming your in a rural area with no that much wifi use an outdoor 2.4Ghz 802.11b/n network should be able to send a signal through one house, and on 500M.

At one side you need an access point with an external antenna connector connected to a high gain directional aerial, and at the other end a client version with a high gain aerial. The best to buy are units designed for the job.

I would recommend a http://www.ubnt.com/airmax#bulletm 2.4Ghz connected to a locally bought high gain rigid 2.4Ghz mesh dish.

For testing any old gear should do to confirm range and reliability. There are specialist IT people that can install such systems.

    What kind of network?

Not to sound stupid but if it is just a file sharing network (and you both have internet already) then why not create something cloud based.

If you want to share internet then I think the fibre cable is best and probably cheapest (assuming you can do it yourself, wont run into problems with land ownership, cable wont get damaged, etc.)
