    I'm afraid so.

As someone else said above you can get wireless extenders, although i havn't had any experience with them so i can't help you there i'm afraid.

Have you any spare router lying around? or one of your friends possibly.

it really doesn't have to be anything fancy.

No but I can buy a cheap one and it will suffice?

You'd want to use an access point connected to the homeplug rather than a second router, especially if using a games console. Otherwise you'd run into double NAT problems.

I think the best place to go is pc world ,or maplins shops.

    Make sure ,
the homeplug unit provides a wifi signal,

as cheaper units just have 1 port ,
    ethernet out.

    eghttp://www.maplin.co.uk/search.aspx?criteria=Powerline HomePlugs&menuno=0
    http://www.maplin.co.uk/devolo-200mbps-powerline-kit-with-built-in-wireless-n300-range-extender-397391

the 104 pound one is the only one i can see that provides a wireless signal.

i presume they have a similar product in peats or pc world,

the point is there s no point in buying a homeplug kit,

    that just has ethernet out,

that,ll only provide broadband to a pc or laptop with an ethernet port.

    i t should have a driver, install cdrom, with a least a pdf ,
setup manual on the cd disk.

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/netgear-200mbps-powerline-kit-with-built-in-wireless-n300-range-extender-587580

this one has wifi out,4 pounds cheaper.

plus ethernet out to connect 1 pc,or laptop,

    using an ethernet cable.

    it has no install cd,

so i presume its plug n play,

no need to install windows drivers on the pc,or laptop.

SO , you looking for a homeplug, with wifi acess ,to be clear about it.
    cost around 130 euros,

    i,d get the 2nd, one,
    99 pounds,

    eg it has wifi,

    and ethernet out,

    therefore ,in theory,

it could be connected to a wap,

    wireless acess point,

which could provide a better signal ,
to one side of the top floor of the house.

eg if you get the 104 pound unit,

theres no way of connecting it to another device.

cos it has no ethernet out port,on it.

I have no idea what a homeplug is but I'm sure I'll work it out :p

(Unless you mean a plug in my home -- which I have plenty of).

    why wifi access?

a small ethernet cable shouldn't be a problem.

what he didn't want was metres and metres of cable going to every device in the house.

Also, i understand the NAT issues, but shouldn't a bridge give you the same NAT type, or did i just get lucky?

Yeah I have to agree with this. If I plug it in at the top of the stairs a 15m ethernet cable should reach my PC.

EDIT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4mPP_QomUA this is exactly what I need :p

You could probably get around it by using port forwarding or "DMZ" but it's just easier not to have to do it. :)

Glad to see you getting somewhere.

how many devices are you currently having problems connecting to?

if the existing wireless reaches the Ipads and the laptops you don't use, a set of homeplugs might be enough.

There's another PC upstairs but it's rarely used for the internet. There's a PS3 up here as well but I think my brother uses his 360 more. I have an iPoud Touch but I don't really care about that. The only major "device" is my PC in my room which seems to also be one of the only ones struggling for a signal.

FOR a non expert, i,d get this one, easy to install,

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/netgear-200mbps-powerline-kit-with-built-in-wireless-n300-range-extender-587580

    plug nplay.
    it has ethernet out,

in theory, you could connect to a console,or gaming pc.

    by ethernet, no lag,

and it might provide a wifi signal, to the ipads, laptops etc upstairs.

    depending on where its placed.

my friend has an ipad, upstairs it hardly gets wifi, maybe 1bar,

meanwhile the laptops get 2 or 3 bar,s on wifi.upstairs.

    router is downstairs.

Would I be physically able to pick up one of them?

in that case, one set of powerline adapter should suffice.

you can always get a router at a later date if you wish.

When you get the adapters, just plug one in beside your router, and attach a CAT5 cable to it.

then plug the other one in beside your computer in your room, and attach another CAT5 cable from it to your computer.

This should fix your streaming of "youtube" issues. ;)

Gonna go out on a limb and say a CAT5 cable is an ethernet cable? :X

I WAS setting up laptop for a friend, i increased, wifi signal,by 30 per cent, on her iphone,
    eircom router,

in back bedroom, by simply going thru the router setup,

trying all the channels, say theres 10 wifi channels,

all here neighbours were on chanell, 5,

i switched over to channell 9,

Shes in apartment , she was getting wifi signal, from her 5 neighbours
    underneath.

backrooms, about 35ft from the router.

took, about 20 minutes to go thru the various channels on the router.

SAY the bedrooms are to the right, move the router,, closer to the right,
2 or 3 feet, if the cable allows this.
i must be in a recession, i can only buy to a new smart phone once a year.
CANT even afford a windows phone,
theres a upside to every recession.
Funny thing is she get 3 bars ,from the routers downstairs.

Channels 5 and 9 are sill interfering with each other, 1, 6 and 11 are the 3 non overlapping channels

So INNSider has told me. Irrelevant because it hasnt helped. And moving the router is not an option. It'sas far as it will go.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,184 ✭✭✭riclad

if you get A good wifi, signal downstairs ,
you,ll probably get a good wifi signal from the homeplug unit, upstairs.
    try 1 or 2 devices at a time .

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,812 ✭✭✭IRL_Sinister

This is the connection when I have my PC plugged in directly to the router downstairs.....

    2652569769.png

    Yeah...

EDIT: This was the result I got earlier when in my room away from the router :/

    33keko5.png

    PRETTY FRUSTRATING!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,812 ✭✭✭IRL_Sinister

So I fiddled with some of the settings on my router and the changes have been phenomenal. I've had <40 ms in games, 0 lagg on twitch.tv and youtube. On my wireless speedtest I'm getting ~40MB DL and ~10MB UL. Absolutely delighted. Saved myself some money too.

Thanks for all the help, lads (and lassies?) hopefully this will fix it in the long run.

Did you change the wifi channel,?
how did you improve the wifi signal so much?

    riclad wrote: »

Yes, I changed the channel. When the modem was initially set up there was nobody else on the channel. But when I opened inSSIDer I noticed there were several networks on the channel. I messed around with a few others and saw results immediately. I eventually settled on a channel that was unoccupied.

Technically, the signal I'm receiving is the same as before (3/5 bars) but it's never dropping any lower and occasionally goes higher. My ping is stable and so are my speedtests. I guess the other networks were interfering. It was my mistake for not noticing it earlier. I had checked it a few days ago and there were no other networks on the channel. However, when I checked it this morning there were like 7 others.

    EDIT: 2653728333.png

These are the kind of results I'm getting consistently compared to the 4/5 I was getting yesterday. The contrast is phenomenal. NOTE: this is wireless (not plugged into the router) and probably 50-60ft away from the router so I'm satisfied with this.

That,s what happens, when upc fibre is avaidable, alot of people get it,
AND all the routers are set to the same channel,
    causing interference on wireless signals.

Maybe they should start using random channels on the routers.

if i go over 30ft from my router, signal goes to zero.

i think thats as good a WIFI signal you,ll get ,
Unless you use another wireless acess point.

Yep, definitely not complaining anymore :) It's strange, though, because it was on a seperate channel. It must have been changed at some point during the tehnician(s) visit(s).
