Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

(with help from the guardian and wiki!)

The English Football League was founded at the Royal Hotel in Manchester, becoming the first national football league in the world. Twelve teams started into the first season on September 8 1888, which would produce Preston North End as their very first champions.

    The first league consisted of

    Accrington
    Aston Villa
    Blackburn Rovers
    Bolton Wanderers
    Burnley
    Derby County
    Everton
    Notts County
    Preston North End
    Stoke F.C. (Stoke City)
    West Bromwich Albion
    Wolverhampton Wanderers

The Second Division was formed in 1892 when a rival league Football Alliance was absorbed into the FL after three years of existence. Clubs included

    Newton Heath (later Manchester Utd),
    Grimsby Town,
    Sunderland Albion
    Crewe Alexandra
    Nottingham Forest.

The second division would become home to Everton off-shoot Liverpool fc (from Lancashire League) Newcastle United from the Northern League and Woolwich Arsenal. The latter was the sole club from the south and suffered poor attendances as a result.

Its notable just how long it took for southern clubs to become part of the League at any level and the North West bias of the early days has arguably continued to this very day. When one considered the trophy count by region.

The best of the best league table, with each point won contributing to the position as of this week, top 50 only.

Everton are the most top flight club with 110 seasons, followed by Villa on 102 and Liverpool on 103.

The top side in the trophy efficiency index are Manchester Utd followed by Liverpool then Arsenal. (Huddersfield Town are 4th!) This is calculated by combining the number of seasons in the leagues top flight and the number of titles won of same.
