    The members of Clonfin Commemoration Committee were shocked in recent weeks when thieves targetted the site commemorating the Battle of Clonfin.

    With the help and guidance of Abbeylara garden centre, the Clonfin Commemoration Committee planted 86 laurel trees on the site at the beginning of March. One Sunday at the end of March, some members of the Committee noticed that a number of the trees were gone. They then made their way to the local Garda station where they explained that 40 of the 86 trees had been stolen.
    Secretary of the committee Seán Kilbride explained: “We expressed a big concern that the remainder weren’t safe”.
    Unfortunately when the committee returned the following day, they found that all but one of the trees had been taken.
    “It’s a major setback to us now”, Mr Kilbride explained further. “We don’t know whether to re-plant them and give the site the respect it deserves.”
    He went on to explain that the committee commemorated the Battle of Clonfin, and the brave people who gave their lives there . He added that it was shocking that “cowards would go, 92 years later and steal a few trees”.
    The Clonfin Commemoration Committee is a voluntary committee which organises an annual event at the beginning of February to commemorate the Battle of Clonfin which took place on February 2nd, 1921.
    Anyone with any information on the theft are urged to contact Granard Garda Station at (043 6687660) or any member of the Clonfin Commemoration Committee."

    Has anyone ever heard of something like this before? Any idea who would do such a thing? Would it have been done for:
    1.) Badness
    2.) A prank
    3.) Too mean to buy a hedge so I'll just rob an entire hedge
    4.) To make money......is there a market for second hand stolen hedges?
    5.) Political reasons

    Any ideas?
    Anyone notice any recently planted laurel hedges around the place?
