A resident that has been living in Hazel Park for decades told me that the little forest in the estate is a fairy fort. It was purposely left untouched when the estate was built.

I visited it yesterday and it is circular and slightly raised like the ones I've seen in the Burren. I'm not sure how common such forts are this side of the bay (are there any in or nearby Galway City?). He also mentioned that tour buses returning from the Connemara used to make a stop there.

Anyone else heard about it before or is he pulling my leg? Here's the location:

He is pulling your leg!!! Good story though. There used to be a house in the trees. I remember as a kid playing in and around there. At that time the house was knocked but the the rubble was still there. A number of years ago the council turned the fields behind those trees into a green area and at that time they also filled in the area round the trees!!!

Fairy fort is a good story though!!

It's a great story if you want to make sure that nothing like a community centre ever gets built on the site :)

    Regards,

Check out the OSI maps. The ones from 100 years ago show what looks to be a few buildings beside it, and the 'fort' itself as some sort of enclosure.

The nearest fort that I know of is in the field beside Corrib Village. You can see that marked on the maps.
