Poor start for Dunne in Germany +2 thru 5. Five par 5's on the course. Irish amateur Paul McBride also playing this week.

Just got curious as I was looking at the leader board and noticed the scoring on the back 9 was worse even though it has four par 5's, so I tried to find out why, which wasn't easy on the European tour website. In their infinite wisdom, they don't give the distances of the holes on the leaderboard page, but I can see where they will put the scores for round four should they make the cut. I also couldn't find the full length they are playing on the website, though it may be there somewhere, so I added up each hole. Yes I'm bored.

It's 7, 583 yards. The par 5's are 647, 595, 632, 663 and 517 yards. The shortest par 3 is 170 yards. Seems ridiculously long and doesn't seem likely to provide much entertainment.

Not to mention the amount of water and sand!!!

I had a look at the course website and it can play over 7800 yards at its full length.

It looks like they have shortened one of the par 5s to make it a par 4 for the week and reduce the total par from 73 to 72. Also the 16th measures 705 yards at its full length but is "just" 663 for the pros.

They have taken 120 yards off the par 5 18th but no doubt that is to create a bit of excitement by giving them the option of going for the green in 2 and bring the water into play

I didn't actually see the course at all haha. It could be very beautiful and water adds excitement but par 5's that are unreachable in 2 are a bit dull. Having 3 or 4 of them I don't know what they were thinking. Wouldn't fancy playing there for free to be honest.

It should have been done about two months ago (basically very shortly after new website and app launch) but still have to give them a bit of credit alright to be fair. They could have held their ground indefinitely.

Great looking leaderboard for the Irish going into tomorrow. Hopefully one of them gets the job done.

Great win for Paul Dunne and lovely to see Shane Lowry's reaction when Paul holed his chip at the last.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,136 ✭✭✭benny79

I don't hate him. He just comes across as a bit of a whinging wally.

Mind you, he seemed more relaxed and good humoured this week, even in the early rounds. Maybe has copped himself on.

This Rolex series has transformed the European Tour - well the events that are in the series anyway. It sort of is a tour within a tour now.

    Great location
    Nice course
    Good crowd
    Fantastic field

Course again a bit too easy - but not sure you can do anything about that.

We are very lucky Rory got us in it. There are a few areas of Europe important to golf not part of it - Germany - Spain - Portugal - Dutch all of Scandinavian loop. A little complex in that Omega are known golf sponsors too. Events also have other commercial links.

Then you have countries with no place in European Tour at all for cultural or political reasons- Turkey , Dubai , China , and South Africa.

I know it is all money and no one cares that much - but the last 4 events of the European tour are a joke.

Great finish in store here. Very packed leaderboard.

Don't get the hate for Hatton. The same people give out about people who are boring and show now emotion.

He plays aggressive, plays quickly and wears his heart on his sleeve. Same as Job Rahm but people don't whinge about him. Better get used to him as he is a cracking player.

I just hate seeing pros blaming everyone on the course. They are professionals at a spectator sports, get over the moaning about noises and movements, especially 50 yards away

Gavin Moynihan had a solid 6th place finish in Sanya on the Challenge Tour. He's 23rd in the rankings with three tournaments to go. Top 15 get a European Tour card for next season.

He is going well again this week and has a great chance to earn his tour card tomorrow. In 4th spot and just 2 shots off the lead heading into the final round

Chase Koepka, younger brother of Brooks, is leading and already has done enough to win his card for next season.

Gavin Moynihan finished Tied-4th in the Ras Al Khaimah Golf Challenge today and with just one event remaining on the Challenge Tour season in Oman starting on Wednesday, the Dublin man moves up 8 spots on the Race To Oman rankings to 18th with the top 15 getting their European Tour card for next season.

Well done also to Ardglass' Cormac Sharvin who also finished T-4th along with Moynihan and goes to European Tour Q-School 2nd stage full of confidence with a full challenge tour card at the very least secured in the bag for the Ulsterman after finishing just inside the Top 70 of the R2O rankings. Michael Hoey will also have full playing privileges on the Challenge Tour in 2018 after also finishing in the top 70 ahead of his visit to Spain next week for second stage Q-School on the European Tour.

So all and all a good week for Moynihan, Sharvin and Hoey. Lets hope that by this time next week comes around that Gavin, the pride of the stunning Island Golf Club in Donabate can secure his full playing rights onto the European Tour in 2018. We certainly need more Irish on the European Tour that is for sure.

    Great to see the 3 lads going well in Turkey;

    Not a bogey between them.

    PH T4 (-6)
    SL T11 (-4)
    PD T5 (-5)

Jesus Dunne loves to finish a good round with a bogey

Moynihan currently 26th after 2 rounds in the Challenge Tour Grand Final in Oman (1 under for the tournament after a 73 today). Projected to be 22nd in the Challenge Tour rankings if things stay as they are. Hoping that in the third round in which he gets underway just after 5 tomorrow morning that he can shoot a round of 65 or 66 to get himself back into contention. Probably needs a (possibly solo) top 5 finish to get his playing privileges on the European Tour for 2018.

If he doesn't get his European Tour card in Oman he has Q-School Final Stage at Lumine in Spain to fall back on. Moynihan will also have conditional status on the European Tour next season which should see him play a minimum of 10 to 12 events also.

Speaking of Q-School best of luck to Niall Kearney, Colin Fairweather, JR Galbraith, David Carey, Brendan McCarroll, Jonathan Caldwell, Gary Hurley, Ruairdri McGee, Cormac Sharvin, Michael Hoey and Dermot McElroy who will all take part in Second stage European Tour Q-School which will take place in 4 venues across Spain starting tomorrow. The top 17 players (number subject to confirmation) usually qualify for the 108 hole, 6 round marathon Final Stage of Q-School which starts on the 11th of November, Saturday week.

Another 73 for Gavin today, 10 shots back from a T-5 position, so looks like off to Q school unfortunately

Gavin Moynihan has finished in T-20th in the Challenge Tour Grand Final in Oman today. He carded a three under 69 to finish on -3. He finished in 19th in the final Challenge Tour rankings, just 4 places outside the magic top 15 and just over 12,000 euro less than Bradley Neil, the man who finished 15th in the rankings.

Moynihan will now play in the European Tour Q-School Final Stage, the 6 round marathon, which starts on next Saturday in two courses Lumine Lakes and Hills Golf Club with all 156 players alternating between both courses and the final 2 rounds to be played exclusively in the Lakes course.

11 Irish golfers are playing in the Second Stage of Q-School with the top 21 or 22 players I believe qualifying from each of the 4 venues for the Final Stage. Here is a summary of how they are getting on so far after 2 rounds.

Desert Springs - 22 qualify - Projected Mark: 6 under: Jonathan Caldwell 5 under T-26th, Cormac Sharvin 2 under T-49th, Niall Kearney Level Par T-61st
El Saler - 21 qualify - Projected Mark: 1 under: Dermot McElroy 1 under T-19th, Brendan McCarroll plus 4 T-45th
Las Colinas - 21 qualify - Projected Mark: 4 under: Colin Fairweather 3 under T-24th, Michael Hoey 1 under T-41st, JR Galbraith 1 over T-55th
    Panoramica - 21 qualify - Projected Mark: 6 under: Ruairdri McGee 8 under T-13th, Gary Hurley 6 under T-21st, David Carey 3 under T-45th

Tyrell Hatton must be one of the biggest knobs on tour. Painful to watch

I see he broke his putter today on the 17th green. Apparently he put it across his knee and snapped it in two after bogeying the hole. He then sank a long putt on the 18th with his 5 iron!

Bizarre really given that he was already well out of contention for the event.
