To be fair, you'd kind of root for the guy. Since his last win in 2015, he's missed the cut in every second tournament he's played in and wasn't in the top 10 in anything for three years. This year, he's had three missed cuts from six starts. Last year he had a second place finish in the Byron Nelson and that's the best he's had in five years. Tough gig this pro golf lark.

Looking at his career earnings - some lean years in there.

$158k from 16 tournaments in 2016 - less than $10k per tournament, before taxes.
Hard to see how prize money covered his costs of travel, caddy, etc. during a season like that - living off the sponsors for that year at least.

He probably would have had a bit put by from his two wins in 2014 and 2015. He also had a few top tens in 2014. I'd say 2017 would have been a tougher year with 18 missed cuts out of 30 starts.

Going to get a lot tougher for people like Every if someone gets the streamlining they want. Don't think players like Every would survive if the tour turns into more WGC type, limited field, showcase events.
Kind of chicken and egg. The Premier League type of setup would completely end those guys' careers and shove them down into the lesser tours. On the other hand missed cuts are huge drains for them because it's just expense and no return. So if they can qualify for a no cut event, it's a guaranteed payday. They may also keep the top guys away from some the cut-line events and give the other players a better chance of finishing in the money.

Matt Every having a shaky start to his second round. Bogeyed the third and in the water off the tee on the fourth. Double bogey, so three shots lost on the first four holes.

I dont see guys like Every getting near the no cut events tbh, qualifying will likely be based on ranking and so, barring some random miracle they just wont even get a seat at the table.

The top guys wont bother playing frequently in the cut-events and so the money, sponsorship and ranking points will be minimal.

Yeah, I expect that would be the result. But they'd still be pretty good comparatively speaking. Even in the lower tiers, the purses are decent enough. You won't get rich on them, but you can make a decent living at it.

Matt Every has steadied the ship after that horror start. Par on the next three holes, although a very shakey looking par on the par 5 6th, where his tee shot ended up in the rough and he had to lay up and then air-mailed the green with his third.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,375 ✭✭✭✭prawnsambo

Put the mockers on him. :(

Missed a nine footer for par on the eighth, so another shot dropped. Seems to be missing greens or at best not getting in the same post code as the pin. Biggest movers so far are Marc Leishman with -3 after 9 (-4 for the tournament) and Patrick Reed who's also -3 after 9, one behind McIlroy. It's quite windy there. Graeme McDowell also on -5.

    I'm sure he did.

More the point was on how that's probably reflective of how things are for a lot of the "journeymen" on tour. If you aren't hitting a few top 10s a year then you'll struggle to be putting much away for retirement!

Scottie Scheffler just took the lead on -7 after an eagle on the 16th. Two bogeys and two birdies in his round and then gets an eagle!

As you were. He's just after giving them both back on the par 3 17th. Landed in the bunker short, air-mailed the pin with his second and three-putted from there. Wind has got stronger and making life very difficult for the players. Lots of misses short. In other news, Mickelson is very unlikely to make the cut. +5 now and spraying and praying everywhere.

Unfortunately he's lost two shots and is back on -3 now. Not as unfortunate as poor Matt Every who's now back on -1. Two bogeys and two doubles after 10 holes. Patrick Reed has also dropped one and Phil Mickelson is trending towards the kind of number I'd have in a round. :)

Bryson de Chambeau is also flirting with the cut line (+1 to +2). It is playing very difficult though to be fair.

Padraig Harrington lost his PGA tour card a year or two ago.

How did he get it back?

    Thanks.

Bay Hill is an invitational. Assume that's how he's there. Perhaps because he's Ryder Cup Captain or more probably his PGA and/or Open wins.

Edit: Another double for Matt Every. Could miss the cut now. Birdie chance on 12 though.

Could become the first player since Camilo Villegas in 2013 to go from outright first to missed cut!!!!

Haven’t seen the golf today but it must be playing much harder. Scores aren’t great at all. Rory will be pleasantly surprised to see he is in the lead without hitting a shot so far

The wind has dropped a bit from yesterday afternoon and even earlier today, but the course is firmer, pin positions are more difficult and it's looking like -1 or -2 would be a very good score today.

    bad hangover:
    Tommy Fleetwood
    +8

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,375 ✭✭✭✭prawnsambo

And just when I'd given up on him, Phil gets an eagle on the 6th (his 15th) and is back to +2. Still outside the current cut line, but I suspect that may move to +2. Patrick Reed has slipped back to -3.

ya, he seems to always have to pull out of a few tournaments mid round every year. i wonder is it always muscle problems, you would imagine with all his resources he could get himself right.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,150 ✭✭✭✭LuckyGent88

    Stolen from twitter;
Phil and Rory clearly not sharing a PR firm. Mickelson on McIlroy's decision to speak publicly against PGL/concept: "Well, I wouldn't come out and say I'm not going to it right away, and lose all your leverage."

Phil looking for his last payday. Don’t really get why Phil would be included anyway. Think he is outside the top 60 in the world, about to turn 50 and his game isn’t in a great place right now.

Sometimes I really do wonder what does be going through Rory’s mind. Absolutely brainless stuff on the 8th.

Brooks still struggling with some of his shots. Pulled another there.
Still a class act and mentally tough.
I’m sure he’ll be back in the groove soon. And in contention in Agusta

No Tiger Woods at Sawgrass next week. Agent tells ESPN back is "just not ready." Blow to the tournament and, surely, Woods's Masters prep

Quite concerning really. He didn’t even look right when he was walking from his car when he arrived at the Genises. Will surely need one or two prep tournaments before Augusta
